White Cities is a homage from jazz pianist Gerald Clayton to the painter Charles White. Through his inventive use of music, Clayton honorably celebrates the artist. The jazz pianist formed a jazz quintet with musicians from Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles, which were all home to White. Through the title of his chef d'oeuvre, the jazz pianist evokes racism and racial tension and draws attention to the oppression black people face in these cities. This wonderful performance also features Charles White's mural painting 5 Great American Negroes for which Clayton composed a melody for each figure, his incredible journey, and personal growth.
