We are not sure if Bach’s sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord were originally composed for these two instruments. The lack of specific ornamentation for the viola suggests this is a transcription. Indeed, many cellists have appropriated the musical score, providing us with renowned interpretations, such as those of Mischa Maisky and Yo-Yo Ma. As a part of Bach Heritage, Philippe Pierlot and Christophe Rousset are on a mission: to rediscover the typically baroque sounds of the viola da gamba and harpsichord.
