This walk through the upper town gives an introduction to the history of Brussels from the Middle Ages to the present day. A quick run-through of the founding and development of Brussels during the early centuries of its existence will help to understand the difference between the upper and the lower towns. Our tour which takes in the Sablons and the royal district enables us to observe the urbanistic, architectural and socio-economic features of the upper town and to discover the periods of successive foreign influences which have left their traces here. It gives us the occasion to learn about the independence of Belgium, the organization of the new state and the influence of its first sovereigns.
