Tom, devastated, travels to the funeral of his lover deep in the countryside. There he meets his lover’s mother, who was completely unaware of her late son’s sexual orientation. His brother, a manly, violent peasant, wants Tom to keep the nature of their relationship to himself. In this austere rural atmosphere, Tom is caught in a web of lies and the farm gradually becomes the setting for a dangerous game. In Brazil, a highly patriarchal country where the holy triad of family, Church and property still reigns supreme, Tom na Fazenda came as a bombshell. The protagonist embodies the outsider who destabilizes the apparent tranquillity of a conservative family and reveals the unspoken violence that prevails there. A play that transports us into a network of complex tensions, avoiding neither seduction, nor blood, nor fear. A dizzying immersion in the web of our little social arrangements. A theatre of mud and blood that dirties and glorifies the body.
