Iran
In light of the ongoing uprising in Iran, we will welcome five photographers to depict the history of Iran.
This exhibition will be formed in two parts, the first one will look back at the last fifty years, then the second part will highlight the current revolt. In addition, a mural composed of news found on social networks will highlight the impossibility of journalists to go there to do their work.
In parallel, events and performances with artists and people from the Iranian community in Belgium will take place.
The first photographer presented is Eric Bouvet, a Frenchman who, since the 90s, has been covering conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Chechnya, Sudan, Somalia, ex-Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Israel. Northern Ireland, Kurdistan, Surinam, Burundi, Libya and Ukraine. His work has been published in many international magazines such as Time, Life, Newsweek, Paris-Match, etc. During his career, he has been awarded various prizes: Paris-Match Prize (1986), World Press (1986), W. Eugene Smith Foundation Award (1997), 3P Foundation Award (2004).
The second photojournalist, Alain Keler, has covered conflicts such as those in Israel, the Solidarność movement in Poland, Northern Ireland, the student revolt in Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, the famine in Ethiopia, the wars in Lebanon, El Salvador or Chechnya. His work has been rewarded with 5 World Press Awards, 2 Visa d'Or, the Gold Medal of the 15th Anniversary of Photography, Bayeux-Calvados Award, a Front Line Club Award, and a Paris-Match Award.
Then, Michel Setboun, photographer of Algerian origin, will also be presented. During his career for the Sipa agency, he won the first World Press Photo award in 1984.
The fourth is named Reza, from his full name Reza Deghati. He is a French photojournalist of Azeri origin from Iran who has worked all over the world, notably for National Geographic. His work has been featured in international media (National Geographic, Time Magazine, Stern, Newsweek, El País, Paris Match, Geo...), as well as in a series of books, exhibitions and documentaries made for the National Geographic Channel. His work has been awarded the World Press Photo, the Infinity Award, the Lucy Award, an honorary medal from the University of Missouri and the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the American University of Paris. France has also named him a Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Mérite.
For this exhibition, we will also welcome Marie Tihon, a Belgian freelance journalist. Member of Women Photograph, she mainly documents the struggle for women's rights. Through her reporting, she focuses on resilience, struggles for justice and migration. She won the Mentor Award Jury Prize and Audience Prize in 2016 at the Visa Pour l'Image festival in Perpignan. In 2018, she was selected to participate in the Nikon-Noor Academy and won the Vocatio Fellowship. Her work has been published in Courrier International, Libération, Le Figaro Magazine, The Atlantic, Al Jazeera, Stern, Vice, etc.
Finally, we will pay tribute to the work of Abbas, a photojournalist who passed away in 2018. During his career, he dedicated himself to documenting the political and social life of societies in conflict. In his major work since 1970, he covered wars and revolutions in Biafra, Bangladesh, Northern Ireland, Vietnam, the Middle East, Chile, Cuba and South Africa during apartheid.

PHOTO | BRUT BXL is coordinated by the Centre d'Art Brut et Contemporain La « S » Grand Atelier in collaboration with Bruno Decharme, collector and founder of abcd-art brut in Paris, and 4 partner organisations based in Brussels: CENTRALE for contemporary art, Botanique , Art et marges museum and Tiny Gallery.
The ART ET MARGES MUSEUM presents a monographic exhibition of JEAN-MARIE MASSOU (1950-2020). Jean-Marie Massou, a true figure of art brut, dug gigantic chasms and underground galleries for more than three decades with the strength of his arms to create what he called "The Temple". At the same time, he recorded hundreds of messages and premonitory dreams on audio tapes, made hundreds of drawings and collages, carved stones and rocks all around his isolated property in the middle of the forest in the Lot. He called this his "mission". "The universal mission" which aims to "warn humanity that the world is going to its ruin, that it is a matter of protecting those who remain".
Curators: Matthieu Morin (La Belle Brute), Anne-Françoise Rouche (La "S" Grand Atelier) and Tatiana Veress (Art et marges museum).
The museum also presents two collaborative projects resulting from encounters between outsider artists and contemporary artists based on the photographic medium. These projects are directed by Brussels-based photographer Vincen Beeckman:

Photos, texts, videos, sound recordings, installations... make up this exhibition resulting from the work undertaken a little over eight years ago by photographer Vincen Beeckman in collaboration with the residents of La Devinière.
This project, initiated by La " S " Grand Atelier, takes place in an old farm near Charleroi, La Devinière, a place of institutional psychotherapy, but above all a place of life, freedom and mutual trust between residents and caregivers.

Encounters and performative approaches around the photographic medium. For this second exhibition, which he has designed on the ART ET MARGES MUSEUM first floor, Vincen Beeckman has given pride of place to encounters between authors of art brut and contemporary artists. In residence at La "S" Grand Atelier for several years, Vincen Beeckman is the privileged witness of the daily life in the studio but also of the collaborative projects that regularly take place there. Anne-Françoise Rouche has also chosen to show a selection of works from the Blu Cammello workshop in Livorno, where visual artist Riccardo Bargellini is involved in co-creations with his participants. These collaborative practices echo those carried out at La "S" Grand Atelier.

Who was Joseph Poelaert (1817-1879), the architect of the Palace of Justice? Why was he so obsessed with his profession that it upset him? Who was Joseph Poelaert (1817-1879), the architect of the Palace of Justice? Why was he so obsessed with his profession that it upset him? He was so possessed that he did not complete his masterpiece – the largest building of the 19th century in Europe – himself. The ‘Schieven architek’, as the locals called him, was a true chameleon that could not confine himself to just one style.
The Palace of Justice is a neoclassical mastodont with Assyrian-Babylonian features. Poelaert regarded himself as an artist, a teacher and an ethical guide to bourgeois society. The entire Palace of Justice is bursting with references to independent justice in a 19th-century state where the separation of powers prevails.
Joseph Poelaert has calculated a great deal for this monumental building: heights, widths, number of steps, numbers and symbols are widely represented in the architecture and form the visible image of the invisible reality. Each number represents a certain quality and has a symbolic charge. The Palace of Justice thus became the most exemplary example of symbolism.
During this visit we dig into the past of ancient cultures and religions and uncover the secrets of the largest monument of the 19th century. You will gain insight into the role of the palace in the functioning of justice and we will visit several courtrooms. You will discover the story of the architect, the architecture, the urban planning and the symbolism behind this monumental façade.

Elisabeth gets her way - Jan Martens/GRIP
In this dance portrait, Jan Martens pays tribute to Elisabeth Chojnacka, the Polish 20th-century cult harpsichordist, who inspired the greatest composers, including Ligeti, Xenakis and Górecki with her incredible talent and who collaborated with Lucinda Childs.
Through an alternation between dance and sound interviews of her close friends, he navigates the movement the way she slalomed with her fingertips through centuries of music history. Jan Martens plays with his body in the same spirit as Elisabeth Chojnacka played the harpsichord, with the "fire of life" to quote Ligeti. While dancing, he stays close to the scores and their colourful personalities. He indulges in the quasi-mathematically complex rhythms that allow for repetition, minimalism and trance. For they have this in common: transforming the performance into a creative gesture.

Le complot du quotidien - Dame de Pic/Cie Karine Ponties
Prolific and relentlessly working, Karine Ponties draws her strength from the inexhaustible breeding ground of our states, our thoughts, our intuitions, and our sensations. Captured in the daily life that encloses and encumbers us, whispering behind our backs and suddenly catching up with us.
If we were to mingle the words of Karine Ponties and Georges Perec, they would say together: ‘We are never prepared for the world. Living means moving from one space to another while trying not to crash into it. You have to sneak into the breach and hold your breath, so nothing can escape.’
Le complot du quotidien transforms the triviality of movement into an absurd universe. The two performers juggle with the overabundant impediments and accidents in an attempt to magnify them in the centre of the stage, turning them upside down, transforming them, and imbuing them with fantasy. This is an invitation to contemplate the world and its day-to-day reality with surprise, humour, and intensity.

M·Ondes - Cie mala hierba·Marielle Morales
The dance of sound: this is how one could describe the work of Marielle Morales, who is fascinated by waves, the invisible, and resonance. Each time, she produces atmospheric creations in which movement, theatricality, visuality, light, and sound interact.
In order to give substance to M·Ondes, three women, three islands at once distinct and connected, sway, morph and become intertwined. In the echo of founding myths, sound sculpts materials, while waves shape moods, states, and the language of bodies.
Forming a delicate and surrealist tableau, this new creation will once again bear an ode to porosity and the power of collective impulses.

REvolutions 2349
One revolves around the axis of the earth between continents, while the other revolves around his own body axis. This spatial and essential necessity unites choreographer Arco Renz and dancer Danielle Allouma in a focal point for the creation of this solo.
Referring to the frequency 2349.32 Hz, attributed to the musical note RE, and to the body in rotation, REvolutions 2349 seeks to transform our sensory perceptions and allows our imagination to transcend their anchorage.
Three spirals – dance, music, and light – unfold on stage in a hypnotic interplay where space and time are tangible forces at work, and from which a compelling structural framework emanates. An archetype of dance and spiritual customs, this revolution of the body, servile in its freedom and free in its servitude, is as old as the history of mankind.
And like a cursor in this timeline, Danielle Allouma’s dancing body negotiates its freedom of movement as a tribute to change and to our longing for emancipation.

BALEC - Chloé Beillevaire & Sabina Scarlat
Everything has disappeared: all that remains is a black and white desert where two jesters feel bored. There is no one left to amuse, no one left to mock. The two women manipulate pairs of tights strewn around them to the point of madness. They mistreat these malleable objects as part of their existential quest. However, the longer they unravel the problem, the more they become entangled, backward and forwards until finally losing the plot completely.
Chloé Beillevaire and Sabina Scarlat conjure up the female figure of the Court’s Jester to allow our anxieties to assume a spectacular consistency in the face of the void.
They deploy every trick in the book to save us from dizziness and guide the audience into a joyful nothingness, aided by comedy.
