The banks of the Canal have changed considerably in recent years, and are now ideal for walking and cycling thanks to various facilities. Besides the development of cycle paths on the Canal bank in the municipality of Molenbeek, the scene is also brightened up by some 130 brightly coloured windmills. These refer to the Flemish etymology of the municipality's name (molen = mill and beek = stream). They were installed by the Cultural Centre, and provide some welcome splashes of colour in this urban environment with its industrial past. In particular, they overlook a number of spaces newly landscaped for leisure use. In addition to its original economic role, the Canal is increasingly being presented, as in other cities around the world, as a great place to relax, go for a walk, practise sport and hang out.
