Arau - Atelier de Recherche et d'Action Urbaines
Understanding Brussels to better defend it!
ARAU was founded in 1969, in a context of ‘Brusselsisation’ and the exodus of Brussels residents to the periphery. The challenge at the time, which is still relevant today, was to defend and promote the inhabited city and a quality of life for all the inhabitants of Brussels. This led to major protests against demolition projects on the one hand and the development of counter-projects on the other, with a view to urban renewal and improving the living environment.
The ARAU intends, through its action to raise awareness and inform the population, to provide the public with the necessary tools to monitor the evolution of the city. This action takes the form of the publication of analyses and studies, the organisation of conferences and workshops, press releases, etc., as well as guided tours.
These tours, which are pioneering in the Brussels region and have been organised since 1977, aim to enhance the city and its assets, and to develop a critical view of its transformations, which includes the preservation and maintenance of its heritage.
Over the years, the ARAU has developed a rich catalogue of guided tours on various themes: “Unmissable Brussels”, “Architecture”, “Brussels in Districts”, “The City in Transformation”, “Summer Journey”, “A Brussels House”, “Brussels: City of Trams”, “Social Brussels”, which can be discovered during public tours or in the form of private, customised tours.

AlterBrussels
AlterBrussels is a not-for-profit association that unites lovers of Brussels and develops numerous projects aimed at promoting and spreading awareness of immaterial, intangible, touristic and cultural heritage, but above all the diversity of the people and inhabitants of Brussels, as intangible human heritage. Our innovative and original project provides an alternative form of tourism both for the inhabitants of Brussels and for tourists. We organize meet-ups and themed visits with a view to promoting the wealth of the city to visitors, and increasing the goodwill of co-inhabitants of Brussels towards one another. We also organize cooperative projects to promote the countries of origin of the city’s co-inhabitants as well as international relations. Lastly, we organize workshops and training sessions for a wide range of audiences.

Brukselbinnenstebuiten/Stapstad
Brukselbinnenstebuiten (Bruksel) is a non-profit organisation that was founded in 1971, inspired by neighbourhood work and urban struggles. Bruksel wants to help people in and outside Brussels to learn to read and understand the city in general and Brussels in particular, socially, spatially, culturally and historically. Bruksel's guides avoid the anecdotal, but engage themselves when they talk to you. They love their city and want to share it with you. Individual, group and children's tours are offered by the non-profit organisation.

Les Visites de mon Voisin
More than tours, (ra)contés, performative, alternative routes that give a transversal reading of the city, that question its actuality through its urbanism, its history, its sociology. The company was created in 2017. During the tours, the neighbours send archival images in real time to your phones, a way to capture the city in all its depths. They offer guided tours off the beaten track, far from the tourist trails.
