Study context and objectives

This study, the TRAVELSAT © Resident Sentiment Index, measures the attitude and support of Brussels residents towards tourism in 30 key categories with detailed information compared to competitors and global standards to help visit.brussels guide its destination development efforts in a sustainable manner.

Main findings of the study and key figures

  • Brussels residents are very positive about tourism, its return and its growth.
  • The overall sense of ownership is in a good "competitive" range compared to the other cities surveyed.
  • The vision and expectation of sustainable tourism is strongly established among residents, in all its dimensions (impact on the quality of life, better distribution of flows, more green spaces, soft mobility, accessibility, enhancement of the local offer...).
  • Pride and promotion of the city are positively anchored in the minds of the inhabitants of Brussels, who however express an increased need for consideration and information...
  • ... even if their willingness to get involved in decisions related to the destination remains moderate,
  • Brussels residents are in favour of financial support for the sector as a vector for economic recovery, and they are looking forward to a (gradual) return of domestic and foreign tourists, but also of business and event tourists, segments that create economic spin-offs and "generate atmosphere" for the city.
  • Tourism-related issues are perceived as seasonal and mainly linked to the problems of managing the flows that "pollute" the quality of life and mobility: noise, waste management, parking problems, traffic, etc.
