Study context and objectives

This study by Kantar TNS is the result of a partnership between visit.brussels, Toerisme Vlaanderen and Kunststeden Vlaanderen. It draws up a comprehensive identity card of the leisure visitor to Brussels and looks at their behaviour, from the booking to the actual stay.

Main findings of the study and key figures

  • Over 1,600 surveys conducted in Brussels between April 2017 and April 2018
  • Day visitors are more likely to visit Brussels with children
  • Visitors are mainly attracted by the historical - heritage aspect of the destination
  • Excursionists are more interested in entertainment
  • In essence, shopping is fairly low for a city trip, more of a one-day activity probably due primarily to national visitors
  • 35% of respondents have already visited Brussels
  • The greater distance people have to travel, the earlier they book their stay
  • Those aged 50-64 are twice as likely (47%) to visit tourist offices as those aged 18-24 (24%)
  • 88% of tourists feel safe in Brussels
