Downtown leads us to the sumptuous Waucquez and Wolfers brothers stores. Now respectfully the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée and a toy store, they are the only remaining store spaces. Horta was a fertile artist, always seeking innovation and renewal. After the First World War and his trip to America, Horta turned to a more stripped-down, geometric style known as Art Décoratif. The most representative example of the architect's period is the façade of the Bozar. And yes, it is a facade by Horta. Even more surprisingly, it was he who designed the well-known Gare-Centrale in our beloved Brussels.

Why Brussels ? Private walking tour - 2h
Two hours on foot, eight guests at most, one Belgian guide. From the opera house where the revolution began to the column raised to the constitution: how a town of merchants was handed a country in 1830 and has been rebuilding itself to fit ever since. A private walk, off the usual circuits.
Seven stops, two hours, walked and explained by Karel. History and culture are his subject, and this is the walk he'd give a friend arriving in Brussels for the first time.
You start on the steps of the opera house, where an audience once walked out of a performance and into a revolution. From there the walk climbs. The lanes are narrow at first, the kind the guilds built to make money in rather than to be admired, and then the street opens, the sky comes in, and you're on the hill where a brand-new country built itself somewhere respectable to be seen. But you'll do more than have landmarks pointed out to you. Brussels is the eternal building site, and there's a reason nobody explains it: a town of merchants was handed a country in 1830 and has been proving itself capital-worthy ever since. Cutting boulevards, burying a river, raising monuments to an identity nobody had needed before. You can read the whole argument in the street plan, two cities meeting along a seam you can cross in a minute, once someone has shown you where it runs.
You finish under the Congress Column, above the rooftops and off most itineraries, where the constitution and the imported king who signed it are written into the stone. Brussels lies below you, and the whole two hours is visible in one view.

Devalck House: From Art Nouveau Heritage to Award-Winning Restoration
Huis Devalck, designed in 1900 by Gaspard Devalck as a gift for his mother, is a fine example of Brussels Art Nouveau. Its elegant façade and preserved stained-glass windows by Raphaël Evaldre make it a living work of art. Carefully restored and awarded a heritage prize, the house celebrates craftsmanship, creativity and heritage.
The Devalck House, a magnificent example of Brussels Art Nouveau, was designed in 1900 by architect Gaspard Devalck as a gift for his mother. The building showcases his characteristic attention to detail: the white-stone facade is punctuated by sleek bands of bluestone and outlined by delicate lines of red brick, creating a harmonious and elegant pattern. Later, Devalck also established his own studio there, transforming the house into both a private residence and a workshop, imbued with creativity and craftsmanship.
What truly makes Huis Devalck special are the beautifully preserved stained-glass windows by master glass artist Raphaël Evaldre. The windows bring the incoming light to life and tell subtle stories through color and pattern, giving each room a unique atmosphere. These artistic elements make the house not only an architectural gem but also a living work of art that reflects the rich history of Brussels and its artisans. For visitors, it is an extraordinary experience to admire the details up close during a guided tour.
Thanks to a meticulous restoration, Huis Devalck was awarded a heritage prize, a recognition of the quality and respect with which the building was restored. The current residents are absolutely enamored with their home and speak passionately about its history, architecture, and the works of art that adorn it. A tour of the interior of Huis Devalck offers not only a glimpse into the splendor of early 20th-century Brussels, but also a story of dedication, creativity, and love for heritage—an experience you won’t soon forget.

The Hotel Riez is an Art Deco gem in the Maritime Quarter of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean
In the heart of the maritime district, the Hotel Riez, built in 1927-1928, has been particularly well preserved by the de Molinari family, acting on behalf of CDA, which has owned the property for over fifty years. Designed by architect Jean-Baptiste Dewin for Joachim Riez, an industrialist specialising in the sale of building materials, it provided office space for the Compagnie industrielle du Rupel as well as a prestigious apartment on the first floor. Inside, visitors will discover the amazing decor designed in the wake of the Exposition des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes de Paris (1925) : A wonderful stained glass window, furnitures signed by the Kortrijk designers De Coene Frères and a kitchen worthy of a film set!
