On the occasion of the screening of La conscience politique, a portrait of Geoffroy de Lagasnerie directed by Léolo Victor-Pujebet, and the reissue of Didier Eribon’s biography of the renowned philosopher Michel Foucault, Pink Screens brings together these two major figures of contemporary thought for an extended conversation at Cinema Palace. The discussion will begin with the fundamental question of the interplay between thought and life, particularly when those lives are queer lives. How does theoretical work take shape at the intersection of a personal journey, social experiences and a gay life? How can life nourish or embody thought? And, in turn, how can political, sociological or philosophical thinking radically transform a way of life, or even propose new ways of living? This encounter builds on the questions raised by cinema when it goes beyond simply portraying lives or ideas and instead shows how thought takes shape through bodies, gestures and stories, making the screen a unique space for dialogue between work and existence. An encounter between art and life that echoes one of Foucault’s powerful final ideas, shortly before his death from AIDS, concerning the possibility of an “aesthetics of existence”: can we make each individual’s life into a work of art? Didier Eribon is a sociologist and philosopher. He is the author of numerous works, including Réflexions sur la question gay, Retour à Reims and Michel Foucault, 1926-1984, a new edition of which has recently been published in Flammarion’s Champs collection. Geoffroy de Lagasnerie is a sociologist and philosopher. His works include 3. Une aspiration au dehors. Éloge de l’amitié, Par delà le principe de répression. Dix leçons sur l’abolitionnisme pénal and L’âme noire de la démocratie. All three were published by Flammarion.
