Meet the Thinker: Jacques Rancière
A former student of the École normale supérieure, French philosopher Jacques Rancière started out in the footsteps of Louis Althusser, before taking his distance in 1974. An engaged intellectual, he is particularly interested in the emancipation of workers and marginalised populations. A tireless campaigner for egalitarian democracy, his latest book Les trente inglorieuses: Scènes politiques 1991-2021 (published by La Fabrique), revisits his many public statements of the past three decades in favour of those who have been left behind: ‘They do not give the perspective of the scholar or the moralist, but rather one person’s contribution to the work by which individuals and collectives without legitimacy apply themselves to redrawing the map of what is possible.’

Since their formation in 2017 the promising Adelphi Quartet have won multiple awards for their lively interplay. With their roots at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, they are uniquely skilled in injecting a springtime freshness into Mozart’s String Quartet No. 14 in G, KV 387. A completely different mood is evoked by the brand-new composition that Bushra El-Turk wrote especially for them. The London-based composer with Lebanese roots wrote Saffron Dusk in memory of the hundreds of victims of the bomb explosion in Beirut in 2020.
