“Workers of all countries, caress one another”: Hélène Hazera came up with the slogan for the Gazolines demonstrations, the great ’70s generation of “transwomanifestations.” By addressing Hélène Hazera directly and intimately, filmmaker Judith Abitbol paints a portrait of a key figure in France’s countercultures from the 70s to the 90s. A member of the Gazolines and the F.H.A.R. (Front homosexuel d’action révolutionnaire), and a tireless activist, Hélène Hazera founded the Trans and AIDS Commission within Act Up, one of her greatest sources of pride. She was the first transgender journalist at a major national daily newspaper, Libération.
