This exhibition presents works by Danae Io, Dóra Maurer, Marie-Françoise Plissart and Margaret Raspé, who frame and sequence daily life through self-constructed image-making devices. Formally and procedurally rigorous, their works also embrace contingency and the interference of everyday realities into the frame. Having a structure in the first place allows for instances of slippage, where the frame does not hold. Within today’s culture, which privileges speed and immediacy, the strong pull of these works stems from their concern with mediation, as seen in the artists’ experiments with photographic and moving-image technologies, often using their bodies as machine-like extensions. While they draw on the artists’ immediate environments, the works are not autobiographical; rather, they question the narrative unity of biography.
