Style Congo. Heritage & Heresy
“Style Congo” explores the politics of cultural representation and appropriation through contemporary artistic and architectural interventions as well as historic documents and materials from CIVA’s collections. The exhibition chronicles the representation of Congo in international expositions held between 1885 and 1958, using Art Nouveau as its anchor point.
“Style Congo. Heritage and Heresy” explores the politics of cultural representation and appropriation through contemporary artistic and architectural interventions as well as historic documents and materials from CIVA's collections. The exhibition visually chronicles the representation of Congo in international expositions held between 1885 and 1958, using Art Nouveau as its anchor point. The movement—at the time also called Style Congo—coincided with King Leopold II’s exploitation of the Congo and reflects a widespread fascination with “exotic” materials and forms.
The works in the exhibition question and destabilize canonical histories and the colonial roots of this heritage. Commander Spoon + Jameszoo’s Blind Group
Flagey will host the opening concert of the Listen Festival with an explosive double bill: Commander Spoon and JamesZoo's Blind Group.
Listen, Brussels’ first urban music festival dedicated to alternative electronic music, is back for 5 days and nights of concerts, DJ sets and workshops. From 29 March to 2 April 2023, the festival will welcome Belgian and international artists to the Belgian capital in collaboration with prestigious local curators.
Flagey will host the opening concert with an explosive double bill: Commander Spoon and JamesZoo's Blind Group.
Flagey, Listen Festival
Brussels’ Commander Spoon interlace their eclectic wealth of influences into an energetic jazz sound, respectfully demolishing walls between jazz, hip hop, rock and electronica. It's easy to see why Commander Spoon are the type of jazz group that appeals to people who normally don't care for jazz. They're music lovers, first and foremost, and they're directly in tune with what's happening in the music world. No other jazz band in Brussels will deliver a ‘party’ atmosphere quite like this one.
Dutchman Mitchel van Dinther, aka Jameszoo, first became known as a DJ before his international breakthrough as a musician and composer. With his latest album Blind, voted by the Standaard newspaper as one of the jazz albums of the year, Jameszoo continues his adventurous quest at the crossroads of jazz and electronics. For his unorthodox musical experiments, he blends jazz and avant-garde sounds with a generous dose of madness.

Stratigraphies
Stratigraphies" looks at the concept of "ghost places " and how they remain etched in our memories long after they have disappeared. The use of salt and water from Transylvania as basic materials for printing photographs reconnects with erased territories . Salt prints from the Turda mine - Transylvania.
The vernacular photos of Romania presented as a counter-shot to the work of Cristina Epure at the Tiny Gallery come from the old collections of the Astra Museum in Sibiu. The ASTRA Museum is one of the most dynamic public museums in Romania in terms of the preservation and active promotion of tangible and intangible cultural heritage of ethnographic value. Photographic testimonies of a rural civilization, the images are the mirror of the relationship of man , often alone in front of his often immense space. The contemporary prints produced by the ancient technique of salted paper inscribe the photographs in a permanence of the material .

Lea Ypi: On Freedom
A talk with political thinker Lea Ypi on the meaning of freedom
Lea Ypi’s memoir of growing up in communist Albania, Free, is an unforgettable coming-of-age story exploring the meaning of freedom in all its forms.
The collapse of communism was a turning point in history that she remembers vividly and recounts with outstanding literary talent. Communism had failed to deliver the promised utopia, putting strict boundaries around one’s individual future. And when the early ’90s saw Albania and other Balkan countries exuberantly begin a transition to the “free market,” Western ideals of freedom delivered chaos: a dystopia of pyramid schemes, organised crime, and sex trafficking.
Now one of the world’s most dynamic young political thinkers and a prominent leftist voice, Lea offers a fresh and invigorating perspective on the relation between the personal and the political, between values and identity, posing urgent questions about the cost of freedom.

Turkey-Syria Earthquake Fundraiser: Kinan Azmeh & Florian Weber in concert
Turkey-Syria earthquake fundraiser
This concert, as part of the Ahliyeh initiative, is held in support of the communities affected by the earthquakes that hit northern Syria and southern Turkey in February 2023. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Ahliyeh initiative*, which will provide direct support to those affected via the different partner entities.
Internationally renowned Syrian clarinet player Kinan Azmeh blurs the lines between East and West in a mesmerising concert together with critically acclaimed German modern jazz pianist Florian Weber. The duo presents their original compositions in this live soulful concert merging the languages of classical, world music and jazz, while not being limited by any of them.
MUSICIANS:
FLORIAN WEBER (piano) has firmly established himself as a global star through a remarkable career. He's been praised as 'an exceptional pianist', 'a marvel of balance', 'a truly forward thinking pianist'. A German, modern jazz pianist, he's also been praised as best jazz national pianist and has been representing Germany as no other pianist does on stage worldwide at renowned festivals - the New York Winterjazz, the Angel City Jazz Festival in L.A. and the Tokyo Jazz Festival. In addition to being a jazz pianist he’s found time for classic tours with Philharmonic Orchestras where he’s played piano concertos by Mozart, Ravel and Gershwin as a soloist. This enterprising artist lives alternately in New York and Germany giving master classes and teaches as a professor at universities in Germany and abroad in the USA and the UK.
KINAN AZMEH (clarinet) is hailed by critics and audiences alike. Intensely soulful and spellbinding, his rhapsodic clarinet is able to seduce with a rare intimacy and explode in ecstasy. Originally from Damascus, Syria, he brings his music to all corners of the world as a soloist, composer and improviser, and has gained international recognition for his distinctive voice across diverse musical genres. He made notable appearances in Paris, Moscow, New York, Washington D.C., Buenos Aires, Germany and his native Syria, including as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Dusseldorf Symphony, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, The Azerbaijan State Symphony, Toronto Symphony among others. Kinan’s compositions include several works for solo, chamber, and orchestral music, as well as music for film, live illustration, and electronics. Winner of Opus Klassik award in 2019, he has recently been appointed to the National Council for the Arts on a nomination by President Joe Biden.
* "Ahliyeh" (civil) initiative, by 'Ettijahat - Independent Culture' and 'Action for Hope', provides direct support to those affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Entity of Decolonization by DAAR – Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti explores the possibilities of critical reappropriation, reuse, and subversion of fascist colonial architecture and its modernist legacy.
The new installation at the core of the exhibition intends to profane the building that is home to the Entity of Colonization of the Sicilian Latifundia (1940) in Borgo Rizza (Syracuse, Sicily), taking its facade and reusing it as seating, around which collective rethinking of modernist and fascist legacies can take place. Toine Thys - ORLANDO
If you like Joshua Redman, Ben Wendell, Paul Motian
Belgian saxophonist Toine Thys introduces the french-Belgian group ORLANDO, featuring his recent collaborations with the French scene. This group bears the enigmatic name of the hero of the eponymous and mysterious novel by Virginia Woolf. Like Orlando who swears to remain immortal and who will cross many eras, these four musicians experience together the many aspects of their reality and their evolution through time.
A variety of styles and tones, subtle rhythms, music where joy and melancholy mingle at every moment. Played with ease, this music invites you to travel in a poetic universe, and opens the door to the great outdoors. The drumming is airy, and the central double bass breathes like the old tree under which Orlando throws himself. The sound and silences are skillfully shared with the melodies of the bass clarinet, and the ever-changing chords of the virtuoso piano: Musical adventure is at the center of this quartet.
To encourage listening and interaction between the musicians, they chose to record the entire album in a single open space (without cabins or headsets). The concentration is palpable, and the musicians are guided by their instinct and trust in each other.

The duo first met in 2021 in Germany while creating an eclectic and international ensemble. They both quickly discovered their common sense of timing and rhythmic perception, regardless of genre, which motivated them to elaborate a unique sound universe. Women, (ex-)drug users, sometimes mothers, sex workers and/or (ex-)prisoners. Their living conditions confront them with the violence of the street and multiple discriminations. This discrimination is the result of a patriarchal, capitalist, classist and racist system, repressive and punitive drug legislation and the lack of political courage in the face of increasing insecurity. When it is not reduced to stereotypes, their voice is most often invisibilised. However, these women have a lot to say and to demonstrate. The St John Passion is Bach's first Passion oratorio, written soon after his appointment as Thomas cantor in Leipzig. He was thirty-eight when the music resounded during the vespers of Good Friday in 1724. The passion gives voice to Christ's suffering and death, and Bach's version is unprecedented. In terms of intensity, the more intimate St John Passion is in no way inferior to its 'big brother', the St Matthew Passion that he would write three years later.

The love and innocence of a young lady (the frail, seventeen-year-old Nastassia Kinski), crippled by social prejudices in the puritan Dorset of the 19th century. In this movie Polanski changes his usual claustrophobic terror for pastoral splendor in this hypnotic adaptation of Thomas Hardy's epic novel.

In a small, peaceful town in Kyushu, a 17-year-old girl, Suzume, meets a man who says he is travelling in search of a door. Deciding to follow him into the mountains, she discovers a single dilapidated gate sitting in the middle of the ruins, the only vestige to have survived the passage of time. Giving in to an inexplicable impulse, Suzume turns the handle, and other doors open in the four corners of Japan, letting in all the disasters they contain. The man is adamant that any door opened must be closed. Where she has strayed are the stars, dusk and dawn, a celestial vault where all times merge. Guided by doors shrouded in mystery, Suzume sets out on a journey to close them all.

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED tells an emotional and multifaceted story about internationally acclaimed photographer and activist Nan Goldin.
ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED tells an emotional and multifaceted story about internationally acclaimed photographer and activist Nan Goldin. The documentary shows Goldin's life, career and activism through unique footage, personal interviews and her groundbreaking photography. Goldin fled her traumatic childhood and found her own scene in which freedom and sexual independence played an important role.
Showing that art can be a weapon, Goldin today takes on the Sackler family, whom she holds responsible for the US opiate crisis. While this crisis continues to claim victims daily, the Sackler family remains major sponsors of important museums worldwide. Goldin's struggle helps her find a place for her own grief.
Oscar winner Laura Poitras (Citizenfour) created a highly personal portrait of one of the most important photographers of the late 20th century.

WRECK-List of extinct species is an interdisciplinary performance mixing movement, dance, sound and visual art. A huge black, plastic, inflatable pillow-like object moves across the stage, like a predator hunting its prey. Around it move the dancers, human figures that are swallowed and spat back out by the mysterious object. In this surreal world the abstract object has power. It provokes and amplifies our imagination, asking us to impose our own interpretations. Pietro Marullo seeks to approach choreography through different lenses using different disciplines to create a new language on stage. WRECK – List of extinct species has been performed across the world in indoor and outdoor spaces.

Infinite Play by Marina Pinsky
This spring, La Loge hosts Infinite Play, a new solo exhibition by Marina Pinsky.
'Infinite Play' aims to level the social hierarchies built into the site’s historical architecture as a masonic temple. Eschewing the symbolic languages of the building’s past use, she overlays an entirely different complex of symbols, rituals and games.
Marina Pinsky examines the way in which we can read images as material, spatial, and ideological models of the world. Using photography as a basis, she creates artworks in a range of media that expand lens-based ways of seeing into three dimensions, often using sculptural means. Her work has been shown in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; WIELS, Brussels, Belgium; Vleeshal, Middelburg, Netherlands; SMAK, Ghent, Belgium; and Kunstverein Düsseldorf, Germany. Her work was included in the 13th Biennale de Lyon in 2015, the 1st edition of the Riga Biennial in 2018, and the 2nd edition of the Hammer Museum's biennial exhibition Made in LA in 2014. Dyed Channel, a solo presentation, opened at Kunsthalle Basel in 2016. In 2021, Pinsky presented a solo exhibition, Undertow at Simian, Copenhagen. Born in Moscow and raised in the US, Pinsky currently lives in Berlin and works in Brussels.

Hamilton de Holanda, Nduduzo Makhathini
What if famous mandolin player Hamilton de Holanda and pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, the first South African musician on the American jazz label Blue Note Africa, were to join forces?
What if famous mandolin player Hamilton de Holanda and pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, the first South African musician on the American jazz label Blue Note Africa, were to join forces? That is what Wynton Marsalis must have thought when he introduced these two virtuosos to each other. The result is Routes of Discovery, in which both top musicians dig into their Brazilian and African roots, influenced by classical music, jazz and hip-hop. Together, they explore the musical diaspora, from the time of the slave trade until today.
Nduduzo Makhathini
Each new generation has its own rising stars. For the young South African guard, this includes Nduduzo Makhathini: jazz pianist, composer and healer. Makhathini's music is virtuosic and projects a spiritual and ritualistic vision of the world. He has already shared the stage with greats such as Wynton Marsalis, Nasheet Waits and Logan Richardson. Yet 'less is more' applies to his performance in Flagey: all Makhathini needs is a piano to transport us into his wonderful world.

From 5 years old A touching and generous show that allows human beings to be human. Three elements. Two acrobats on a Chinese pole and oxygen, the invisible gas that is all around us and yet is in short supply in Jesse's body. With Rocio's help, Jesse shows that you don't stay upright because of your fears, but because of your dreams. Jesse has cystic fibrosis and the pair evokes the fragility of our existence and the power of hope. Discovering yourself, learning to help yourself, to ask for help, learning to find the strength to find fulfilment, all tackled with great sincerity.

Mozart : Jupiter
With his 41st symphony - nicknamed 'Jupiter' - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart put his last symphony on paper. Sick and penniless, Mozart nevertheless completed the work in record time, but died before he could hear it. The reference to the Olympic god was given later. And rightly so: because like Jupiter, the supreme god who rules the heavens, Mozart towers high above the symphonic world with this 41st.

Casimir Liberski ReTRio
Born 33 years ago in Brussels, Casimir Liberski is a pianist, composer and improviser who made his marks in NYC for about a decade after graduating from the Berklee College of Music. He decided to move back to Belgium in 2018. An insatiable jack-of-all-trades and bulimic heir to his "gods" Monk, Coltrane, Miles Davis, among the many deities of the colossal repertoire of baroque, classical, modern, jazz, and contemporary music, Casimir is also an obsessive tweaker of vintage analog synthesizers. "A lifetime will not be enough to quench my thirst for music," he says with a smile.
The Zelda Suite Project
The idea at the start of this project consists of taking historical (retro!) video game themes and giving them a jazz or even “free jazz" spin, following Ornette Coleman's "harmolodic" approach. Fascinated by the cleverness of these catchy electronic tunes that manage to stay in your head without getting old, Casimir is taking his ReTRio on an atypical journey of acoustic, constantly evolving, live jazz. His thoroughly contemporary interpretations of video game themes intertwine with his unique improvisational skills, flowing into a highly singular and versatile style of jazz.

Vlaams Radiokoor gives voice to the two faces of love. The Juliet Letters, a series of songs between rock and classical written by Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet, offer dramatic and sometimes cynical reflections. Hope in the beauty of love is restored through beautiful choral works by male and female composers. In Green Reset, Opinion Public takes you to a post-apocalyptic world where a mismanaged ecology has led to us forgetting that we have any authentic relationship with nature. Mendelssohn – Strauss
During a cultural journey, Mendelssohn falls completely under the spell of La Bella Italia. The rich art treasures, the beautiful landscape, the many traditions – they all earn a place in his Fourth Symphony.
Iconic stories with strong characters in the leading role – Tijl Uilenspiegel, Don Juan, Zarathustra: Richard Strauss was irresistibly drawn to it. In his masterful version of Don Quixote, Richard Strauss drags his listeners sometimes delicately, sometimes ironically and flamboyantly, into the fight against injustice.

Evgeny Kissin
Piano legend Evgeny Kissin has been performing in the world's biggest halls for more than 30 years. His remarkable technique and unique musical interpretations make him one of the greatest contemporary pianists. Kissin returns to Flagey to share his passion and virtuosity in a programme featuring the leading composers of their time: Bach, Mozart, Chopin and Rachmaninov.
Evgeni Kissin chose to include Chopin’s Polonaise in his program for a particular motive: “For me this Polonaise is clearly about the tragedy of the Polish people who were victims of the Russian imperialism in Chopin’s time. I think the parallels with the current situation are very obvious".

Art Nouveau Summer School
Heritage and innovation : Art Nouveau, a laboratory for past, present and future challenges
The programme offers a unique opportunity to dive into the heritage of Art Nouveau in Brussels and beyond and explore how Art Nouveau can act as a laboratory for current and future challenges. Participants will undertake a journey through European culture and history as well as reflect on the links between Art Nouveau and today’s challenges related to architecture, urban renovation and heritage management.
How did Art Nouveau blossom and later expanded throughout Europe and beyond? What are the links between Art Nouveau and cultural and heritage management policies? How is this revolution in art and architecture still relevant today? How is Art Nouveau valorized today? How can public and private stakeholders make Art Nouveau it accessible to a wide audience ?
The programme is built around two focus points: the first part will shed lights on the full scope of the Art Nouveau transdisciplinary and transnational movement. Lectures will focus on how Art Nouveau blossomed in Brussels and later around Europe and beyond, all the way to Asia for instance. It will also address how Art Nouveau infused society well beyond architecture, expanding its influence to arts, ornamentation, furniture, etc.
The second part will invite participants to reflect on the relationship between heritage and innovation through the lens of Art Nouveau. Lectures and discussions will focus on current issues related to urban renovation and preservation policies. They will also explore the links between cultural heritage and tourism as well as the valorization of heritage, including as as an economic resource, in Brussels and other European cities.
With a view to foster transdisciplinarity participants will also be invited to broaden their perspectives by reflecting on hidden scientific aspects in Art Nouveau and bio-inspired and bio-mimetics structures.
Bringing together a transnational and inter-disciplinary team of academic lecturers as well as students from different CIVIS universities, the programme aims to foster cooperation in education and research within the CIVIS alliance. It also offers opportunities for dialogue and exchanges of views with practitioners and experts from the non-academic world such as museums curators, architects and other actors involved in heritage and urban policies.
Implementation:
The programme is designed in collaboration between the three partner universities. All partners will be involved in selecting, teaching and assessing students. For the implementation of activities, both virtual and in Brussels, the organisers will be assisted by the summer school office at ULB who will carry out administrative and logistics tasks (processing applications and registrations; booking on-campus or off-campus accommodation; providing student support, organizing visits, etc).
