This is a social housing building. What is striking is its date of construction, 1901. At that time, it was quite revolutionary for workers’ housing to be built in such an exceptional Art Nouveau style. Note the Egyptian-style design of the entrance. Each apartment had two bedrooms, a kitchen and, to top it all off, a private laundry room and toilet - quite a luxury at the time. Clearly, for the architect, cheap was not synonymous with ugly. Well done, Léon Govaerts!
