Stoclet Palace is an architectural masterpiece. An unheard of modern gem considering it was built in 1904. Austrian architect Joseph Hoffman was one of the founders of the Vienna Secession Movement, a group of artists who rebelled against academic pomp. They revolutionised not only architecture but also painting, music, literature and even psychoanalysis with Sigmund Freud. This building embodies a radical version of modernism, total art. The architect designed everything, from the plans to the door handles, furniture, drapes, lighting, garden and even the decorations. The dining room features mosaics by Gustav Klimt. Unfortunately you can only admire them virtually since the house, which is still owned by the Stoclet family, is closed to the public.
A complete masterpiece
