The construction of a new town hall was actually also a speculative project of the real estate company La Compagnie Immobilière de Cureghem. The project was actually intended to achieve two objectives: to beautify the centre of Cureghem with a splendid town hall and an attractive square, and to attract real estate and construction speculators who would be prepared to invest in such a lovely area. With the proceeds generated by the sale of the plots, the municipal government would easily be able to pay for the expensive new town hall. Not only that, the project also provided the funding for Place du Conseil and the nearby streets. The square itself was renovated ten years ago: motorised traffic was pushed back to give pedestrians more breathing space, and a ‘dry fountain’ was erected in front of the town hall. A dry fountain is built on a flat surface and can be turned on in summer and off in winter, for example. At number 4 you will see one of Cureghem’s many evangelical churches.
