The Ixelles ponds are one of the most refined sites in the capital. Look around and you will find some splendid Art Nouveau, Art Deco and eclectic buildings. These natural ponds, which have been here since the Middle Ages, were landscaped in 1873 by the German landscape architect Edouard Keilig in the English style. A typical feature of this garden style is the artificial grotto, which is decorated with fake ancient ruins. The aim was to recreate the time before the industrial revolution. A Platonic remake in a mechanical era.
