Abbaye de la Cambre, a welcome haven of tranquility. A place that has lived through much. Founded in the 13th century, it was ransacked during the French Revolution, then it became a body shop, an arsenal, a cotton factory, a boarding school for young girls, in the 19th century a ‘beggar’s depot’ and finally the headquarters of the National Geographic Institute. A zig-zagging history. Don’t miss the terraced gardens, where you will find a beautiful monument created in 1922 in honour of the great naturalist writer Camille Lemonnier, who was nicknamed the Belgian Zola.
