This bourgeois house is characteristic of the Art Nouveau style, with its bay window, a partially glazed structure that projects slightly from the facade. The mosaics are by Célestin Helman, whose famous workshop was located in Berchem Sainte Agathe. You can see the motif of a woman’s head encircled by flowers, which was common in the Art Nouveau period. It was commissioned by Alphonse Hellinckx. Perhaps it was his love for urban aesthetics that prompted the local residents to subsequently elect him as mayor. His campaign focused on building the city with beauty in mind.
