The current railway station for south-bound trains is the fourth to have been built in the history of Brussels. The first was located on place Roupeplein in the city centre. Because this location offered insufficient room for expansion, a new railway station was built in the Saint Gilles area. However, this had to be torn down to accommodate the construction of a north-south line. Consequently, yet another new railway station was built at the present location. With the advent of the Thalys and Eurostar high-speed trains, the railway station received a facelift that included a separate check-in zone for high-speed trains to London. Two covered shopping streets were added to the station, and the neighbourhoods flanking the station soon made way for office buildings.
