Schaerbeek is big. With its 130,000 inhabitants, it's one of the most populous communes of Brussels. The town hall demonstrates the long-standing desire for it to be a city within a city. The building is a striking work of art in the Flemish neo-Renaissance style. It's also a family affair. The building, designed by architect Van Ysendyck, was completed in 1887. Unfortunately, in 1911 it was seriously damaged by arson. So it was his son, Maurice, who rebuilt it as an exact copy. Look at the houses on the square. They are modelled on the style of the town hall. Local compliance, perhaps? Take a look inside, you won’t regret it.
