This work by Belgian artist Nathalie Joiris was unveiled in 1999. Three pairs of granite pillars, each of which seems to protect a hawthorn - seemingly a metaphor for nature. Solid and eternal like granite, but inert. Fragile and mortal like the tree, but which will change, grow and bear flowers if we take care of it. Is it not a little like holding up a mirror to ourselves?
