Verwée House. This sculpture, originally a fountain (1901), is a surprising combination of a naked woman in the centre with an ox above it. On either side, fish spouting water. And in the medallion, you see the portrait of Alfred Verwée. This is eclecticism taken to the extreme. Everything has been mixed up: the painter’s pet subject (the ox), his region (Flanders, embodied by a naked woman, more beautiful than the traditional lion) and of course the great painter, that’s a given. Oh and that’s a palette not a tray!
