Here you will find one of the oldest remnants of a labourers’ alley. To accommodate the strong demographic growth in the 19th century, property owners were extremely keen to divide their land into small plots throughout the entire La Rosée quarter. To get the most out of the available land, houses were built even in the courtyards of residential blocks. These cheap labourers’ houses could only be accessed through a narrow alley. Although the municipal government began demolishing these unhealthy alleys in the 1930s this one was preserved. It was even placed on the heritage list in 1998! Unfortunately, you won’t be able to visit the alley: it is indeed hidden behind a grey doorway next to no. 8 rue Haberman.
