The Royal Observatory was built in 1883. It was featured in Hergé's The Shooting Star and is now home to three renowned institutes, focusing on astronomy, meteorology and aeronomy, the study of the physical and chemical atmosphere of planets, including ours. On either side of the entrance you can see two art installations by Tim Roosen. Right, the moon. Left, the earth. It is towards the latter that the curls topped with flowers seem to turn... or are they bulbs? In the centre of the roundabout is a statue of Baudouin, the fifth king of Belgium, who died in 1993. He is seen walking with his back to the city. Is he heading for the stars?
