Discover the Ateliers Mommen behind this gate! A sort of artists’ city that has existed since the late 19th century. Felix Mommen was a frame maker, among other things. Perhaps he was looking to fill his beautiful frames when he had the idea of welcoming artists to these workshops. Some of the tenants, who were often broke and paid their landlords with paintings, are now considered true masters: Rik Wouters, Félicien Rops, Van Rysselberghe and Evenepoel. In the early 2000s, this small Montmartre in Brussels was at risk of being swallowed up by real-estate speculation. Thankfully, the commune bought the site in 2006, saving it from oblivion.
