In the 1980s, place Lemmens boasted a baker, a butcher, a book store, a pharmacy and several other small businesses that did not detract from the neighbourhood's residential atmosphere. Although this commercial diversity is no longer a typifying aspect of this square, the uniform character of its houses has nevertheless been left intact. Place Lemmens was an initiative of the Compagnie Immobilière de Belgique, a real estate company that built numerous houses for labourers throughout Belgium in the 19th century.
