Here you see a small bust that speaks volumes about the history of Europe. This sculpture, created in 2009 by the Czech artist Janda, is a tribute to Jan Palach. A tragic symbol. In 1969, this history student set himself on fire in Prague's Wenceslas Square to protest against the Soviet invasion. Twenty years later, in 1989, opponents of the communist regime led by Vaclav Havel, launched Jan Palach Week. Daily demonstrations triggered the Velvet Revolution. The flames of this martyr have never been extinguished.
