Sandrine Piau & Ensemble Contraste
Clair-Obscur confirms Piau's exuberant, all-conquering versatility.
From the sun shining in Richard Strauss’s Tomorrow to the melancholy of his very last song. From the enigmatic and sensual La Flûte enchantée in Maurice Ravel’s Shéhérazade to the mystery of the forest in Alexander von Zemlinsky’s Waldgespräch and Ernest Chausson's Le Colibri. But also works by Johannes Brahms, Ernst Bloch and Louis Spohr...
After performing in our Requiem, soprano and harpist Sandrine Piau is returning to La Monnaie for a recital dedicated to a personal obsession of hers: the conflict between light and darkness. Accompanied by the Ensemble Contraste, she has an evening of mystery, nature and poetry for you, bringing together touching and contrasting mélodies.
Press reviews
"Piau's bright, crystalline tone and care for words reveal a mature artist at the peak of her powers." — The Sunday Times
"Piau’s exquisite singing (...) perfectly captures that unique, twilit half-world, poised between darkness and light, that characterises fin-de-siècle and early-20th-century Viennese music, and that also seeps into Strauss’s late masterpiece." — Europadisc
"In all these pieces, Sandrine Piau brings out the miracle of her musical sensitivity." — Res Musica

Dhafer Youssef - Street of Minarets
Combination of the Eastern sound with the Western? Oud master, vocalist and composer Dhafer Youssef is at the vanguard of a movement in contemporary music that brings East and West together. He is building bridges between different music. As one of the most inventive oud players, he has freed the instrument from its traditional role and brought it into jazz.
Dhafer Youssef has played with musicians around the globe, including Herbie Hancock, Husnu Senlendirici and Zakir Hussain. He won the prestigious Dutch Edison Award and BBC Music Awards twice. His high-pitched muezzin voice and voluptuous oud earned him notice at the Echo Jazz. As a figure in the contemporary jazz fusion scene, his music's strange and fascinating beauty is a journey through East and West dialogue.
In Bozar, he will perform his new album `Street of Minarets` as part of his European Tour.
On his forthcoming album, Street of Minarets, Dhafer offers a gift for the dreamers, the lovers, the fighters, and the obscure. What was once an unfinished project that he felt was missing the soul his music usually has, overcoming obstacles of anxiety and vocal surgery during the pandemic would go on to rekindle his eternal love of music and provide him with the motivation he needed to rewrite and rearrange the record. The result is a relatable journey of sufferings and successes, ultimately spotlighting Dhafer’s inspiring resilience.

Carte Blanche to Martin Salemi
About Time (Igloo Records) Martin Salemi (piano, compositions), Boris Schmidt (doublebass), Daniel Jonkers (drums) After his first album “Short Stories” which seduced us with its mix of syncopated grooves, luminous ballads and chiselled melodies, Martin Salemi is back with a new album. Refined, with a hushed atmosphere, its coherence of purpose and musical maturity confirms his talent in offering us timeless music, outside fashions and trends, a sincere music nourished by a great humility. With “About Time” (IGLOO Records), Martin Salemi and his trio succeed in creating a work that is at the same time dense, compact and airy, while letting the music breathe and never seeming to force it. A Tribute to Jean-Pierre Catoul
Already a little more than 20 years ago, the Belgian jazz scene lost an exceptional figure: violinist Jean-Pierre Catoul. This flamboyant musician left his mark on jazz, chanson française, world and rock music. During his short career, he most notably worked with pianists Charles Loos and Pirly Zurstrassen, as well as guitarist Peter Hertmans. An artist who knew no borders, he directed Led Zeppelin’s string quartet, and also accompanied chanson française artists such as William Sheller, Barbara or Alain Souchon. Twenty years later, fellow and friend pianist Charles Loos pays him homage with a spectacular bowed string instrument trio (violin – alto – cello) accompanied by an accordionist. On tap for this unprecedented evening: compositions by Jean-Pierre Catoul as well as compositions dedicated to him.

Sensational, historic, unprecedented... The music critics and the public were unanimous: the Czech pianist Lukáš Vondráček was the brilliant winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2016 after his performance of Concerto No. 3 by Sergei Rachmaninov. We therefore did not hesitate to offer him a new performance of this legendary concerto in Flagey.

J.S. Bach: das Kapital
In 1729, Johann Sebastian Bach composed the church cantata Was frag ich nach der Welt (What should I ask of the world?). Zamus, the centre for early music in Cologne, is now giving the work a contemporary twist. A creative team under the direction of composer Leonhard Bartussek and choreographer Alexandra Waierstall creates a wild mix of music, dance and visual elements, interweaving past and present, while not shying away from social criticism. Belgian Griet de Geyter, an established name in the international music scene and a specialist in vocal baroque, also dazzles as soprano.
Bartussek (director, composition, concept, visual creation), Waierstall (choreography), Haunsperg (video), Dieckwisch (set design, video), Froehly (costumes), Boul (costumes), Griet De Geyter (soprano), Clint van der Linde (countertenor), Feyfar (tenor), François (bass), Jennings (dance), Chen (dance), Szymura (dance), zamus kollektiv (ensemble), Suhr (light design)

Old Sea Brigade
Ben Cramer describes 5 AM Paradise, his vivid and moving third album asOld Sea Brigade, asa coming-of-age record: ten songs that balance youthful abandon with maturity and restraint, full of imaginative flourishes, evocative textures, and graceful melodies that lend magnitude to mundane moments. Cramer first introducedOld Sea Brigade with his debut EPLove Brought Weight followed by his 2019 debut album, Ode To A Friend. He toured with artists like Passenger,Tall Heights, WildRivers,Joseph, Lewis Watson, and Luke Sital-Singh ,developing an undeniable chemistry withLuke that carried over to the studio on the collaborativeAll the Ways You Sing in the Dark EP.
At the same time, Cramer was establishing himself as a sought-after producer to artists from around the world who stopped by his Nashville home studio, including Australians Angie McMahon andLawson Hull, London's John Joseph Brill, Montreal's The Franklin Electric, and rising talent from his local community like Braison Cyrus and Paul McDonald. His 2021 sophomore album,Motivational Speaking, was called “some of the best quarantine art”(Consequence)and “sharply written and infectiously propulsive.”(Uncut)5 AM Paradise builds on those successes, as he revels in new sounds and ideas and explores the textures of everyday life in songs that make space for doubt and worry alongside joy and pleasure. He leaves his songs unresolved—posing more questions than he answers—so that they reveal more and more of themselves each time you hear them.

Piano recital with Marco Mantovani
Join us on this journey of musical discovery with the pianist Marco Mantovani, assistant professor of piano at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel, professor of piano at the Conservatoire de Pantin in Paris and doctoral researcher at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
We will begin with Schumann's eight fantastic pieces, known for their emotional and imaginative qualities. We will then dive into the works of Debussy, Janáček and Prokofiev, using their unique styles to highlight and bring to the fore some of the distinctive features of Schumann's compositions. With Debussy we will explore Schumann's poetic side, with Janáček the intimate and personal side and with Prokofiev the humorous and playful side.
