Getting the itch to go on a shopping spree? Choose pieces imagined or created in Brussels by eco-conscious designers and craftswomen. Out with fast fashion, in with ethical and sustainable design.

Thanks to its mix of cultures and its status as the capital of Europe, Brussels is a veritable creative crossroads, conscious of the challenges facing the world today. It's a rapidly changing society where consumer habits are in dire need of a rethink. A number of fashion designers are taking up this challenge by opting for short circuits, upcycling and zero waste. They are choosing to produce collections in small quantities or on demand, using fabrics from the dormant stocks of luxury houses or pieces unearthed from all over the capital. These unique pieces are made with respect for the craftsmen and the environment, and sold at fair, transparent prices.

Are you tempted to discover this sustainable and ethical creativity whose only limit is the imagination of the designers? Here are some of the names you'll regularly come across at designer markets and pop-up stores in the capital. In Brussels, it's easy to opt for slow fashion!

Eco-conscious designers and sustainable brands

Méson

Annabelle and Thaïs met in Brussels while studying communications. They are the brains behind Méson, a 100% Belgian, sustainable upcycling brand. These environmentally-conscious designers are committed to keeping all their production stages in Belgium, working between Brussels and Mechelen. A QR code on each item you buy allows you to learn its history and the journey it took to reach you. Jeans become bags, ties become tops, towels become dresses... anything is possible!

Conni Kaminski

Conni Kaminski is a German designer who has lived in the capital for almost 20 years. Well-known on the Brussels scene, she creates ethical and sustainable collections that are 100% made in Belgium. Her elegant, feminine designs play on asymmetries and contrasting materials. Upcycling is an integral part of her production process, adding a touch of originality to the textures and volumes. If you drop in to the designer's elegant eponymous boutique on rue du Marché au Charbon, you're sure to come across her in her workshop.

MaisonElise

MaisonÉlise is riding the wave of a very simple concept that has proven very successful over the last few years. At its heart, each product is a t-shirt (black, grey, white or vintage) or a jacket (vintage) to which designer Elise Viste adds sleeves made from fabrics salvaged from the stocks of designers and fabric manufacturers. Elise Viste, a graduate of La Cambre Mode who trained with some of the world's top designers (Alexander McQueen, Victoria Beckham, Stella McCartney, etc.), produces exclusive items in very small quantities. If you're lucky enough to buy one of her unique creations, you can be sure you'll be the talk of the town on your next outing!

Leslie Ferré

Leslie Ferré, a French designer and craftswoman based in Belgium, produces every piece she dreams up herself, guided by her textile discoveries. Sensitive to ecological issues, her contemporary, soft and comfortable creations are made from forgotten fabrics from fashion houses. Her collections are made up primarily of small series of t-shirts, sweatshirts and cardigans with graphic inserts. Feeling creative? Leslie Ferré also gives sewing lessons in Brussels to pass on her know-how. You'll regularly spot her at Brussels' designer markets.

Kaly Ora

Flore and Trang met in Bangkok while working at a fashion start-up. It was during this experience that they became aware of the negative social and environmental impact of the fashion industry and decided to create Kaly Ora. This sustainable swimwear and sportswear brand is built on ethical values. The fabrics used are made from nylon with a low ecological impact, and the pieces are sewn in workshops that respect the craftsmen.

Sé-em by Charlotte Mounzer

Charlotte Mounzer, creator of Sé-em, is a graduate of La Cambre Mode. Her years of working alongside renowned designers showed her the lack of ecological awareness of some and the wasteful use of supposedly high-end materials. Drawing on her experience, Charlotte launched her own brand in 2019. Since then, she has been designing timeless, circular collections based entirely on these overlooked noble materials. Ecological attention is even paid to the smallest details: the buttons, for example, are made from vegetable ivory. Her creations are designed in Belgium, where she was born, and produced by craftsmen in Lebanon, close to her family roots.

Eva Velazquez

Eva Velazquez's artistic universe is inspired by a love of the past and beautiful materials. She gives new life to utilitarian garments and sturdy fabrics, such as overalls, checked shirts and traditional military uniforms. Eva is keen to tell a story, and recycles the old (right down to the buttons and lace) to make it timeless. The collections, which are designed and produced in Belgium, are based on pieces sourced from all over Europe. Has this got you dreaming? Meet Eva Velazquez in her Brussels boutique.
