Ever since their beginnings, Les Halles have captured and crystallised movements stemming right from the edges of art and society, in an unprecedented alliance of both learned and popular culture.
It is an ideal space to create new performative formats, going beyond the classic partition between creators and spectators. Unconcerned with the barriers separating disciplines, willing to shake up the norms, Les Halles resonate with a desire for participation and involvment, be it individually or collectively, thus characterising the digital age.
Open to contemporary hopes and upheavals spanning from the neighbourhood right out to the world at large, Les Halles keep on looking for what Europe, still on a quest for its own destiny, has to offer: exploration of new passions, reason seeking out adventure, the utmost freedom of style.

That's cafe-theater "Le Jardin de ma Soeur", at the edge of the ancient "Grand Béguinage de Bruxelles", alongside one of the quays of the old port of Brussels where the spirit of the dock workers lingers and where one can still feel the presence of the beguines with their long black robes.

Théâtre de Toone
During the Spanish occupation of the Netherlands all theaters were closed to prevent the actors from raising satirical pieces against the Spanish rulers. As a result, doll shows came into play: it was easier to tolerate the fierce dialogues when pronounced by lifeless dolls. About 1830 Antoine "Toone" Genty opened a puppet theater, then in the Marolles. More than 180 years later, this popular entertainment has grown into a Royal Puppet Theater. After Genty, his (unrelated) successors would also be called Toone (Antoine).
The classics are performed in the local Brussels dialect with wooden puppets (the so-called poechenel), sometimes in Dutch or in French. The puppet theater and museum has been located near the Grand Place for four decades. The theater is located on the upper floors of the building, on the ground floor there is a pub. The museum contains old dolls, including 19th century specimens.

The Gilt Paper Flower, a listed building since 1997, has for decades been a meeting place for locals and tourists alike, whether curious about or fascinated by the history of this 17th-century building. An estaminet for a long time under the premonitory name of Café des artistes, the Flower soon became what it is famous for today: the place where artists, particularly the Surrealists (Marcel Mariën, René Magritte, Louis Scutenaire, etc.) and the Cobras (Dotremont, Alechinski, etc.), met in an infernal flea market setting.
Open Monday to Sunday from 8am to midnight, La Fleur en Papier Doré offers a range of local produce (including Verschueren saison, beers from the De Ranke brewery, and Stouterik on draught from Brasseries de la Senne), which can be enjoyed with a portion of cheese or sausage. Since its reopening in May 2023, The Gilt Paper Flower has closed its kitchen to concentrate on its role as a café.
The venue also has two rooms where the public can enjoy a programme of lectures, concerts, poetry and literature...

Vertigo
Hidden behind the walls of "L'Estrille Du Vieux Bruxelles", a listed monument and oldest inn in the city, which has been a place of thought, a cabaret and restaurant, the Vertigo is a cocktail bar dedicated to the art of mixology. Alexis Mosselmans, chief mixologist, has gained the confidence of the masters of the discipline by participating in numerous international competitions. For this 24-year-old master mixology is close to gastronomy. The essentials such as juices, syrups and macerations are home made and combined with the best alcohols.

Tigre
A Belgo-Vietnamese brasserie, is that a first? First or not, that's what Thanh, from Brussels himself but with Vietnamese roots, has set up. In corner premises a stone's throw from Flageyplein/place Flagey, he has transformed a former pizzeria into a spacious, pleasant bar/cafe, somewhere in between an old-fashioned Belgian bar and a Vietnamese restaurant. The interior was designed by the Brussels architect Simon de Wrangel. Thanh himself, along with some capable acquaintances, did the work on the retro interior, with its exotic touches. His establishment is called Tigre because the tiger is a kind of symbol of Vietnam. Soon, moreover, you'll be able to get Tiger beer from Vietnam there.

À la Mort Subite
We need to go back in time more than 100 years to explore the origin of this unusual name. Around 1910 Mr THEOPHILE VOSSEN ran an establishment called "LA COUR ROYALE". Amongst his many customers were a lot of employees working at the National Bank of Belgium. They would kill their time in the pub playing a dice game called "421". Before returning to the office, the employees would play a quick last game and the loser was called the "MORT SUBITE" or sudden death. Very soon this name became well known and THEOPHILE VOSSEN decided to rename his pub and beer: "A LA MORT SUBITE".
The tradition has been continued ever since. Today, the fourth generation of the VOSSEN family still serves the delicious Gueuze beers in the same establishment with the original 1928' decoration.
