In Brussels, you’ll find a host of venues dedicated to performances for young audiences. All year round, they offer varied programmes tailored to children. In theatres, cultural centres, and other venues, kids and families can enjoy theatre, puppetry, circus, and dance adapted to their world and imagination. They can discover the magic of the performing arts in a warm, welcoming, and child-friendly atmosphere. We've compiled everything you need to know about these hotspots and their programmes.
Dedicated venues for young audiences
- La Montagne Magique
The La Montagne Magique theatre is a leading name in French-language theatre for young audiences in Brussels, staging over 300 performances a year for families and school groups. Object theatre, storytelling, puppetry, shadow theatre… there’s something for everyone! Every May, the theatre hosts the ‘L’Art et les Tout-Petits’ festival, dedicated to performances for youngsters as young as 6 months old!
Bronks
When it comes to theatre for young audiences, BRONKS is another safe bet! This theatre for young audiences, part of the Dutch-speaking theatre network, puts on high-quality shows. In addition to being a venue for performances, it is also a production company (which creates countless plays) and an experimental space (where children and teenagers learn to act or create). Every year, the Bronks organises the VOLT festival, a theatre festival at which children and young people play all the roles: actors, creators, reporters, and more…
La Maison qui chante
La Maison specialises in music for young people: concerts, shows, workshops, storytelling… primarily in French, but sometimes in other languages too!La Roseraie
A venue for artistic creation, performance and outreach dedicated to theatre for young audiences, circus, street arts and puppetry. A wide range of workshops are held there throughout the year, including workshops on creative writing, musical awareness and visual arts. To round off the season in style, La Roseraie organises the Esprit de Famille festival in June, featuring a wide range of theatre and circus performances for the whole family
Théâtre Royal du Perruchet
Housed in a former farmhouse in the Boondael neighbourhood of Ixelles, Théâtre Royal du Perruchet is a unique venue dedicated to keeping the tradition of string, rod and glove puppetry alive. The performances, often inspired by classic fairy tales, are suitable for children aged 3 and over. This theatre is also home to the International Puppet Museum - Peruchet, which houses close to 4,000 puppets from all over the world!
Théâtre du Ratinet
Théâtre du Ratinet is another puppet theatre in Brussels, specialising in shows for children aged 2 to 7. All the stories are devised by the theatre’s team, and the children are invited to take part throughout the show, often playing key roles as the plot unfolds.
It is worth noting that knowledge of the language – whether French or Dutch – is generally not a barrier for many children’s shows! It is in this spirit that La Montagne Magique and Bronks have joined forces to present the Export-Import festival every November – an international theatre festival for young audiences that breaks down the barriers of language and forms of expression.
Venues that offer young audiences pride of place
- Le Petit Chapeau Rond Rouge
The varied programme at Le Petit Chapeau Rond Rouge features plays, one-man shows, improv performances and magic shows. While not a venue entirely dedicated to very young children, some shows are suitable for children aged 8 and over. - Le Petit théâtre Mercelis
Specialising in performances for young audiences, Le Petit Théâtre Mercelis also hosts artists-in-residence. The theatre stages a variety of productions, including plays, object theatre and puppet shows, as well as musical performances and storytelling sessions… - Le Varia
Le Varia's programme is shared between theatre and contemporary dance. Throughout the year, the theatre hosts a variety of shows for young audiences, all of which share a desire to challenge preconceptions and explore the world's complexities. - Théâtre Marni
The Marni is a hub of artistic projects and embraces all disciplines. Theatre, dance, circus and concerts... there’s something for everyone. Every year, in April, the theatre organises the Mini-D Festival, a dance and circus festival aimed at young audiences, from babies to children up to 11. - Le 140
The theatre puts on a wide range of puppet shows, plays and cabaret performances.
What’s more, many French- and Dutch-speaking cultural centres in Brussels devote a significant amount of their programme to children’s shows! This is particularly true of the Jacques Franck Cultural Centre, La Vénerie, Wolubilis, Archipel 19, Le Senghor, the Maison des cultures et de la Cohésion Sociale in Molenbeek, and the Ten Weyngaert municipal centre.
