Who says the performing arts and good food don't go hand in hand? You can meet up at the theatre before or after a performance for a bite to eat, a friendly coffee or a late-night drink with friends. Here are our suggestions for bars, restaurants and cafes to whet your appetite or share your impressions in good company after the show!
Théâtre Le Public restaurant
With its chequered bar and red and yellow ceiling, Le Public is bold right down to the tiniest detail! The chef serves up a gourmet menu and a fine assortment of tapas that change with the seasons. Stealing the show are the carrot soup with citrus fruit and sesame, wasabi-soya salmon or courgette salad with mint and feta. Special mention goes to the bar, which stays open later after shows. All in all, a genuine treat for the taste buds!
🍻The bar is open before and after shows.
🥪 The restaurant is open before shows from Tuesday to Friday (last order at 19:30) and after shows on Fridays and Saturdays.
The café and bistro at the Théâtre National
During the day, Café National, run by Alice and Zahra from the cheerful duo Les Gâtées, welcomes you for a tasty, relaxed break. Coffees, sweet or savoury breakfasts, varied lunches: there’s something for everyone, including colourful salads, reinvented croque-monsieurs and a few plant-based options. And to finish on a sweet note, homemade pastries take centre stage!
On performance evenings, you might want to head to Bistro National, run by Chef Yves Hofman. Over a drink, a sharing platter or a generous dish, people gather in a festive and laid-back atmosphere. Vegetable croquettes, breaded chicken, vegetarian burgers, sardines in olive oil… The menu blends reimagined classics with flavours from elsewhere, catering to both light bites and hearty appetites.
A lively, welcoming place where the food is good, sharing comes naturally and service is quick - without ever making you feel rushed.
🥪 The Café is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 15:30.
🍻 The Bistro is open from 18:00 on performance evenings.
La Balsamine
The foyer of this Schaerbeek theatre, set in a contemporary decor with large bay windows, offers a small-scale catering service with a big heart. Every performance evening, at ‘Balsa’, Zio Gusto cooks up a vegan dish and a soup with local flavours and originality as the main ingredients. Committed to preserving our food heritage and a pioneer of urban agriculture, the chef puts his values on the plate. The proof is in the eating: when in season, he offers chicory grown at the theatre, cooked with grilled halloumi, a few grains of fresh pomegranate or even a touch of his famous Brussels chutney.
🍻 The bar is open at 19:00 every evening.
🥪 Snacks are available before each show.
Rooftop and cafe: Le Beursschouwburg
If you fancy a drink in a trendy spot, head to the Beurs Cafe. With its brick walls, chequered floor tiles and loft decor, this cosy bar just a stone's throw from the old Brussels stock exchange has a distinctly New York feel. Love getting up high and enjoying the view? Climb to the 5th floor for a drink under the lanterns on the rooftop. The music is good, the view is unobstructed and the atmosphere is ultra-casual.
🍻 The cafe is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 9:00 to 16:00.
🍻 The rooftop is open all summer, more info on the partner's website
Le Bar des Brigittines
With its atypical facade, the Brigittines asserts its uniqueness through its architecture and its programming. Located in the contemporary part of the building, in the heart of the main hall, the Brigittines Bar comes alive on performance days. No stranger to evenings consisting of two shows, the Brigittines also indulges in a pairing of flavours. Every evening, they serve up a different veggie dish, one that's both delicious and ultra-balanced. Choose the miso aubergine with preserved tomatoes, roasted cauliflower with ginger or courgette fritters with mint!
🍻 The bar is open from 18:00 on performance days.
The KVS Cafe
This little cafe and its dynamic team have set up shop on the first floor of the amazing KVS Box, a modern extension of the theatre. Chef Simon Cavalier, who also works at the Phare du Canal, is responsible for the menu, which includes vegetarian pitas, creative croque-monsieur sandwiches and melt-in-your-mouth brownies. As soon as the sun comes out, you can quench your thirst (with homemade fruit juices and fresh cocktails, in particular) under one of the large, arty parasols on the terrace of the De Servante summer bar, to a background of funky music.
🍻 The cafe is open Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 18:00
🥪 The kitchen is open Monday to Friday from 12:00 to 14:30.
The Varia theatre
In the mood for a bit of a mingle? Then the Théâtre Varia Bar is the place to be, in the company of the colourful characters of Gare/nements. This trio of friends, including chef Lulu, offer zero-waste cuisine to suit vegans, vegetarians and carnivores. The idea is to source their produce from small, local traders and market gardeners, and offer tasty, committed food. Try the platters, burrata with olive oil or wraps to whet your appetite. More than just a little peckish? Go for the seasonal dish and desserts of the day!
🥪The bar and restaurant are open on performance nights, two hours before and after the show.
🍻 For performances before 18:00, they are open one hour before and after the show.
Theatre cafes, a Brussels institution
Fancy some local culture and authentic little corners where the neighbourhood’s authentic spirit is still there for all to see? In Brussels' theatre cafes, you can enjoy a drink and a snack during the performance, in a warm atmosphere and close to the artists.
