Homage to Annie Ernaux
Three writers and a film take you to the heart of the Nobel Prize winner's work
Bozar pays tribute to Annie Ernaux, winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature ‘for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory.’ Journalist Pascal Claude will talk with Belgian writers Myriam Leroy, Nathalie Skowronek and Caroline Lamarche about the importance of her work and how it has influenced them. Rokus Hofstede will also present his Dutch translation of Ernaux’s latest book, Le Jeune Homme. The evening will end with a screening of J’ai aimé vivre là directed by Régis Sauder with the participation and the writings of Annie Ernaux.
Pascal Claude is a journalist and presenter at La Première/RTBF.
Myriam Leroy is a journalist and writer. Her first novel Ariane was a great success. Her latest book is Le Mystère de la femme sans tête.
Nathalie Skowronek is the author of a family trilogy and an essay on the memory of the Shoah. Her book La carte des regrets won the European Union Prize for Literature 2020.
Caroline Lamarche is the winner of the Prix Goncourt de la nouvelle 2019 and of the Prix quinquennal de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles for the whole of her work.
Rokus Hofstede, translator of Ernaux, Bourdieu and Proust, was awarded the prestigious Martinus Nijhoff Prize.

The tour of the BELvue!
Due to the current health crisis, this activity cannot take place until further notice.
An interactive tour of the BELvue museum, including first a search for information in small groups and then a lively game of questions about Belgium.
In small groups, the participants first discover a theme room in the museum and present the results of their visit to the rest of the group in the manner of a guide. Then the "BELvue Tour" begins! Divided into several teams, the participants play an original quiz and become real experts on Belgium and its history.
The BELvue tour is a very interactive visit where everyone discovers the museum's contents in their own way. The dynamics of the game provoke exchange and fun within the group.
TWO POSSIBILITIES FOR A VISIT:
1. Independently → The group leader must prepare the activity in advance and supervise it during the visit to the BELvue. An educational file is available on www.belvue.be - free of charge.
2. With an animator from the BELvue → dates on request - 50€.
Several versions of the Tour of the BELvue have been developed, including a version for French language learners (FLE).

Miradas de Mujeres Isabelle de Borchgrave X Frida Kahlo
Miradas de Mujeres (Women’s Gaze), highlights the view of Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave on Frida Kahlo, a woman’s perspective on the artist’s role in society, and their shared love of fabric, patterns and colours.
Isabelle de Borchgrave’s approach explores an often-ignored facet of Frida Kahlo's intimate personality, surprisingly more cheerful and radiant than her artistic work might suggest. By using more than 4 kilometers of paper and cardboard painted by hand, she created dresses, carpets, furniture, trees, recreating the unique universe of the Mexican artist and her iconic house, the Casa Azul (The Blue House).
The exhibition invites the public to dive into the joyful universe entirely made of paper of Isabelle de Borchgrave and to be inspired by the generosity of this contemporary artist whose creative practice remains resolutely incomparable.

Picasso & Abstraction
For the first time, the major stages that marked the links between Picasso's work and the history of abstract art is brought to light.
From the first Cubist experiments of 1907, carried out on the fringes of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, to his later work, which is sometimes situated on the borders of action painting, this surprising relationship is shown in a subtle chronological and thematic exhibition, where more than one hundred exceptional works reveal the artist's pendulum movement between abstraction and the figurative over the decades.
Another major theme of the exhibition is the artist's studio, a true formal laboratory, and shows Picasso's creative process through various series of drawings and prints, allowing the viewer to understand how he works and reflects on the representation of the chosen motifs.
The exhibition, with its sharp and innovative theme, invites the viewer to appreciate Pablo Picasso’s extraordinary creativity and his ability to constantly reinvent himself.

Belgium has been hiding a treasure for 600 years: the manuscripts of the Dukes of Burgundy. Come discover these fabulous masterpieces rescued from time at the KBR museum.
Six centuries ago, Brussels belonged to the rich and powerful Dukes of Burgundy. Skilled politicians and cultured patrons, they established a stirring treasure, a unique and fascinating collection of manuscripts: the Library of the Dukes of Burgundy.
These masterpieces, which have survived the ravages of time and of history, have been looked after for you by KBR. It is now opening its vaults to share the highlights of this fantastic collection via its new museum. The sixteenth-century Chapel of Nassau and the various rooms that surround it will form the backdrop to the museum.
The museum offers you the opportunity to share in Europe’s medieval cultural past, and admire beautiful illuminated manuscripts.
These days, everyone knows about Jan Van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, but the miniature artists, responsible for producing illuminated manuscripts, are every bit as impressive. So much so that some say that the finest Flemish Primitive paintings can perhaps be found in manuscripts.
It is these original manuscripts that are at the heart of the new museum.
We will tell you the history of these books and the era that produced them. You will find out why you shouldn’t trust rabbits, in what way the Middle Ages were hilarious, how mermaids were spotted in Brussels, and discover how history books sometimes lie…

Nikolai Lugansky
The man whom Gramophone describes as "the most trailblazing and meteoric performer of all" is one of the best interpreters of Rachmaninov. Nikolai Lugansky enjoys exalting this music with a technicality always accompanied by sensitivity and depth. Winner of the second prize at the Rachmaninov Competition in 1990, he also produced a recording of the Études-Tableaux op. 33 and op. 39, which is a true benchmark. At Bozar, he will revisit Op. 33, a richly textured technical masterpiece, and combines it with the First Sonata, Op. 28, a programmatic work inspired by Goethe's Faust, as well as the famous and sublime Variations on a Theme by Chopin, Op. 22. Hurry and book your seat for this unmissable recital at the Rachmaninov Festival!

Talk by Francis Maes
Why do we know Rachmaninov primarily as a composer of piano concertos?
In this (Dutch-spoken) lecture, Francis Maes explores why we know Rachmaninov mainly as the composer of the Second and Third Piano Concerto. Critics still disagree about the rest of his oeuvre: The Isle of Death or his choral symphony The Bells rather rarely make it to the stage. With his operas The Miserly Knight and Francesca da Rimini, it is easy to overcome a sense of loss, of great promise that is never fully realised.
Rachmaninov might have had it in him to become a successor to Tchaikovsky. Due to circumstances, his oeuvre fell more limited than that of his illustrious predecessor. Whereas Tchaikovsky practised all genres and left a versatile oeuvre, the harvest of Rachmaninov's talent remained rather limited in number and genres. In this respect, the two famous piano concertos form the indisputable part of his legacy.
Francis Maes is Professor of Musicology at Ghent University. As author of the book A history of Russian Music: From Kamarinskaya to Babi Yar, which has since become a standard work, he is considered a specialist on Russian music. His most recent book, Een verhaal van het niet (A Story of the Not), is about Tchaikovsky's opera Yevgeny Onegin.

In her socially engaged work, visual artist Golrokh Nafisi mixes the personal, the day-to-day and the political. For Moussem Cities Tehran, Nafisi revisits the installation Continuous City. It consists of different elements such as textile, hand-embroidered curtains, in-situ murals and more. They reflect the cities Nafisi visited between 2017 and 2021: Tehran, Cairo, Lahore and Beirut. Brussels also gains a place in this new installation, as well as current events in Iran. As a whole, the installation offers a highly personal reflection on the cultural metropolis in different continents and the complexity of life there.

Moussem Cities Teheran | Marjan Farsad
After Pouya Ehsaei's concert, the Moussem Cities Teheran musical evening at Bozar continues with Marjan Farsad. Under the ingenuous and colourful contours of her illustrations and melodies, the Iranian artist delivers a profound art of dark and penetrating beauty. Born in Tehran, the singer-songwriter, illustrator, animator and social activist writes, composes and draws far away from home. She surrounds herself with her close friends, singer-guitarist Shervin Najafian and percussionist Yahya Alkhansa, who share with her nostalgia for their homeland. In her lyrics, she expresses the hope of a regained freedom: the hope of being able to be with her family in real life and not only in memories. At Bozar, Marjan Farsad and her musicians will perform tracks from her new EP, Be Yadam, and from her two self-produced albums, White Tree and Blue Flowers.

Rachmaninov All-Night Vigil - Latvian Radio Choir
When Rachmaninov finds himself on a Bozar poster, you can expect to hear the breakneck piano chops from one of his piano concertos. Through his Vespers, one of the most impressive a cappella choral works of the 20th century, you will discover the Russian composer's more contemplative side. Drawing inspiration from old Russian Orthodox melodies, Rachmaninov assembles a colourful kaleidoscope in which the low male voices particularly appeal to the ear. The Latvian Radio Choir, one of Europe's best choirs, will be supplementing this with works by Eriks Ešenvalds and Peteris Vasks. With their exceptionally pure, warm and harmonious sound, they will transform our large hall into a place of peace and serenity.

Duo²
Piano duos are rather rare, and therefore this concert is an exclusive opportunity to hear a special repertoire. Kanako Ninomiya and Sara Vujadinovic have Japanese and Serbian roots and they first met in Brussels. They enjoy playing together, either side by side on one piano or each on their own instrument. For their concert during the Rachmaninov festival they have naturally chosen a Russian programme: sparkling duets by Skriabin, and Stravinsky’s piano arrangement of his ballet music Petrushka, devised on this occasion for two pianos. From Rachmaninov himself, they are performing Suite No. 1, dedicated to Tchaikovsky and his Russian Rhapsody, which the piano virtuoso wrote when he was only 18.

Talk by Ruben Goriely
Rachmaninov and the 20th century: modern pianist or traditionalist composer?
Of all the composers of the 20th century, few are as accessible as Rachmaninov. But what explains this success? What is it about the theme of the second movement of his Second Piano Concerto that still makes hearts skip a beat when it is covered by Celine Dion in her song All by Myself? Using specific examples, we will zoom in on specific features of his music.
Ruben Goriely is a researcher at CERMUS (Centre de recherches en Musicologie de l'UCLouvain) and a musicology assistant at the Faculté de Philosophie, Arts et Lettres (FIAL/UCLouvain). His research mainly focuses on the use of voices and orchestration in music of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Dhafer Youssef - Street of Minarets
Combination of the Eastern sound with the Western? Oud master, vocalist and composer Dhafer Youssef is at the vanguard of a movement in contemporary music that brings East and West together. He is building bridges between different music. As one of the most inventive oud players, he has freed the instrument from its traditional role and brought it into jazz.
Dhafer Youssef has played with musicians around the globe, including Herbie Hancock, Husnu Senlendirici and Zakir Hussain. He won the prestigious Dutch Edison Award and BBC Music Awards twice. His high-pitched muezzin voice and voluptuous oud earned him notice at the Echo Jazz. As a figure in the contemporary jazz fusion scene, his music's strange and fascinating beauty is a journey through East and West dialogue.
In Bozar, he will perform his new album `Street of Minarets` as part of his European Tour.
On his forthcoming album, Street of Minarets, Dhafer offers a gift for the dreamers, the lovers, the fighters, and the obscure. What was once an unfinished project that he felt was missing the soul his music usually has, overcoming obstacles of anxiety and vocal surgery during the pandemic would go on to rekindle his eternal love of music and provide him with the motivation he needed to rewrite and rearrange the record. The result is a relatable journey of sufferings and successes, ultimately spotlighting Dhafer’s inspiring resilience.

Dhafer Youssef - Street of Minarets
Dhafer Youssef is coming to Brussels for his new album.

J.S. Bach: das Kapital
In 1729, Johann Sebastian Bach composed the church cantata Was frag ich nach der Welt (What should I ask of the world?). Zamus, the centre for early music in Cologne, is now giving the work a contemporary twist. A creative team under the direction of composer Leonhard Bartussek and choreographer Alexandra Waierstall creates a wild mix of music, dance and visual elements, interweaving past and present, while not shying away from social criticism. Belgian Griet de Geyter, an established name in the international music scene and a specialist in vocal baroque, also dazzles as soprano.
Bartussek (director, composition, concept, visual creation), Waierstall (choreography), Haunsperg (video), Dieckwisch (set design, video), Froehly (costumes), Boul (costumes), Griet De Geyter (soprano), Clint van der Linde (countertenor), Feyfar (tenor), François (bass), Jennings (dance), Chen (dance), Szymura (dance), zamus kollektiv (ensemble), Suhr (light design)

Tord Gustavsen & Trygve Seim - Inner Chorals
Norwegian jazz pianist Tord Gustavsen claims to be 'on a constant search for a fresh and radically stripped-down honest beauty in music'. And he does this with verve: after Gustavsen's previous success in interweaving his melancholic jazz with gospel, Scandinavian folk and Caribbean music, this time he takes several Bach chorales as his starting point. Duetting with saxophonist Trygve Seim, authentic lyrical beauty is blended with contemporary improvisation in which every note is approached with the greatest caution. The music radiates shimmering calm: silence rarely sounded so present. A pure, intriguing voice in today's music scene.

Silver & Garburg Brahms / Elgar Enigma Variations
The world-famous Silver-Garburg Piano Duo commissioned Austrian composer Richard Dünser to write a new arrangement of Johannes Brahms' First Piano Quartet. This can now be heard in a version for piano four hands and string orchestra.
The well-known Enigma Variations by the British composer Edward Elgar are also part of the programme. Once, Elgar came home one evening and sat down at the piano for some improvisation. His wife noticed a melody that she liked, and Elgar decided to work on it. What started as a bit of fun resulted in a monumental composition that has become one of the most played pieces of music of the 19th century.

Safe Place - Juraj Lerotic
Followed by a q&a with the director Juraj Lerotic in presence.
Strong directorial debut by Juraj Lerotic, who also doubles as the lead in a very personal story about a family dealing with the aftermath of a suicide attempt. Traumatic as it is, the incident causes a rift in the family's daily life. The plot is limited to the most acute, a short period and a situation that boils down to the most important thing - saving a loved one.
The film won the Best Emerging Director award at the Locarno Film Festival 2022 and is the Croatia’s Oscar entry.
Juraj Lerotic (1978) was born in Kiel, Germany. In 2001 he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar with a major in preschool education. Currently, he is a senior undergraduate of film and tv directing at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb. His last film, Then I See Tanja (2010), premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival.

Benjamin Appl & Ensemble Masques
Intimate Bach
Benjamin Appl probably needs no introduction: the baritone's awards cabinet is gradually filling up, and the Financial Times recently hailed him as 'the most promising of today's up-and-coming song recitalists'. Appl usually creates a furore for his classical-romantic work, but here he returns to an old love: the song repertoire of Johann Sebastian Bach. Together with Ensemble Masques, under the musical direction of Olivier Fortin, he will perform a varied selection of Bach's more intimate works: from excerpts from the iconic St Matthew Passion to some of his lesser-known but beautiful cantatas.
