Visiting Brussels without sampling the local fare? No, that’s not an option. Brussels is synonymous with good food. If you like typical Belgian dishes such as shrimp croquettes, vol-au-vent or filet americain, you will be doubly spoiled in our capital. Many restaurants carry the Brusselicious label, which means they have been designated as authentic Brussels eateries where you can enjoy the best of Belgian cuisine. Here’s our selection.

Les Brigittines

In this old art nouveau post office in the Marolles, you will be royally indulged by chef Dirk Myny, a true Brussels native himself. As a lover of terroir cuisine, he chooses his ingredients with care and works them into special Brussels creations - be sure to taste the phenomenal vol-au-vent or the Zenne Pot based on cabbage cooked with Cantillon gueuze and Bloempanch (traditional Brussels black sausage). Complete your experience with a tasty lambic or an unique natural wine.

The Brasserie

In the beautifully renovated Stock Exchange building, in the heart of the city, lies an authentic Belgian restaurant befitting its magnificent setting. The naming may not have been preceded by a long brainstorming session. Neither was the menu. Why search high and low when it’s all so blindingly obvious? The Brasserie offers Belgian brasserie cuisine where the influence of Belgian Beer World, the beer museum in the same building, is never far away. A taste of Belgium at its best.

The Brasserie

Bouillon Bruxelles

A Belgian branch of Parisian concept Bouillon in Brussels? It was a no-brainer! You'll find Bouillon Bruxelles just off the world's most beautiful square in the Îlot Sacré. It's an unpretentious brasserie where you can eat delicious Belgian food at a reasonable price. Moreover, it’s warm, cosy decor of wooden panels and mirrors invites you to get comfortable. On the menu: Zeeland mussels, Flemish stew, filet americain, stoemp and the best shrimp croquettes in Brussels (Winner of the 2024 competition).

Vincent

At Restaurant Vincent you’ll immediately feel right at home. This is because you come in through the kitchen, which creates an atmosphere of trust. Once in the main dining room, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the beautiful tile mural of a fishing scene drawn more than a hundred years ago. The price list on the wall dates back to the same period. It has been updated since, but is still on the money. And so is the excellent brasserie cuisine. The various preparations and flambéing are done at your table, just like in the old days. You can’t get more authentic than that!

’t Spinnekopke

This legendary old-fashioned tavern combines passion and tradition, offering tasty specialities at affordable prices. The generous beer menu features an excellent selection of gueuzes, so there'll be something to please the beer lovers among us. Vegetarians will also find several dishes to their liking, with a few revisited classics, such as veggie versions of meatloaf or stoemp with sausage. And if you're feeling brave, the restaurant serves choesels, a mysterious Brussels dish made from offal.

Le Vismet

As the name suggests, most of the delicacies in Le Vismet come from the sea, with fresh produce and no frills. You can feast on fried sole or poached skate, and for meat lovers there is always an excellent filet americain à la minute. Finish with a typical dame blanche in this cosy restaurant with open kitchen, near the Place Sainte-Catherine.

Kartouche

Kartouche describes itself as a ‘Belgian culinary bistro’. They serve up personal takes on the time-honoured classics of Belgian grandmothers up and down the country. Belgian cuisine, certainly, but executed with real finesse. To start, try the bitterballen served with their wholegrain mustard. Next, order a stoemp with a delicious Cantillon beer sauce. And to finish, why not try a waffle with crème diplomate and hazelnut praline? This is local, seasonal and utterly delicious cuisine.

Les Potes en Toque

In a residential neighbourhood in Ganshoren, you can discover this 17th-century farmhouse with open kitchen, large terrace and all-Belgian menu. Conviviality and tranquillity are key words in Les Potes en Toque, in addition to generous brasserie classics such as filet americain and choucroute, as well as seasonal delicacies such as asparagus, chum and game.

't Potverdoemmeke

A neighbourhood restaurant in Schaerbeek run by a bilingual family with a menu in the Brussels dialect, it doesn't get more authentic than ‘t Potverdoemmeke. So you can expect local products, classics such as stoemp with sausage or ballekes in tomato sauce, all served in a friendly Brussels atmosphere at democratic prices. The mayonnaise is homemade and the fries are freshly cut, what more could a Belgian want?

La Pierre Bleue

Admit it: whenever you’re strolling around the Grand-Place, you’re always in the mood for some Belgian food. Especially when local cuisine is served as elegantly as it is at La Pierre Bleue, an excellent spot in the Îlot Sacré. The vol-au-vent is a must. But be sure to try the americain ‘Jean’ too. Large groups are more than welcome, even when they include vegetarians.

Taverne du Passage

Declared bankrupt in 2021, the famous brasserie in the Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries has since been resurrected. The handsome Art Deco interior was given a facelift (be sure to check out the golden origami cloud) and a new chef was appointed. In addition to Belgian classics like shrimp croquettes, sole or filet americain, you can sample vegetarian and vegan surprises, such as roasted cauliflower with sesame.
