Livre d’images sans images - Mette Edvardsen
If the moon could tell us what she sees on earth, how would we translate her words? And what if a cloud would come in between? Using the ‘weather report’ as a template for dramaturgy, the piece works with different media that do not seek to come together.
Livre d’images sans images borrows its title from a book by HC Andersen, also referred to as The Moon Chronicler. In this story, a painter is having a conversation with the moon. Every night, one after the other, she tells the painter what she sees on her journey around the earth and asks him to paint what she describes. The story addresses inspiration, imagination, storytelling and translation.
Mette Edvardsen is making performance pieces where she talks or sings and while she does, a whole world appears under our eyes. Her voice fills up the darkness of the stage and gives shape to objects, people, animals, situations, and stories that exist for a moment, then disappear again.
For the performance Livre d’images sans images, language is used as material, and a way to address imagination through other means than purely visual. Drawing on the ‘weather report’ as dramaturgy, the piece works with different media that do not seek to come together.
• Although some of the works of Mette Edvardsen explore other media or other formats, such as video, books and writing, her interest is always in their relationship to the performing arts as a practice and a situation. She has since 1994 worked as a dancer and performer for a number of companies and projects, and has since 2022 been developing her own work which regularly has been supported and presented by Kaaitheater. This performance was supposed to be shown at Kaaistudio’s in 2021 and 2022 but was potsponed due to the pandemic.

Les Petites Géométries
Tw o remarkable figures stand facing each other. Armed with a crayon and with their heads hidden in black boxes, they conjure up a starry sky, a black and white city, a coloured bird, and faces showing countless emotions. No sooner has one story finished, albeit imperfectly, than a new adventure has already begun.
Join us for this surrealistic and poetic journey between masked play and object theatre.

DAUGHTERS
Conceived in the context of the Art Nouveau year, « Daughters » proposes to create a dialogue between past and present by connecting female Art Nouveau artists and contemporary female artists practising the same mediums (textile, silk painting, sculpture, engraving, etc.). The aim is to present and promote these artists and observe how their shared practice creates a genuine link among them.
While the Art Nouveau style advocated equality among all the arts, at the turn of the twentieth century, gender parity was far from being a reality. While some Art Nouveau artists have gone down in history, those are rarely women, unless they are associated with men. This invisibility is sometimes linked to the fragility of the chosen medium, but is most often due to the dictates of society that tend to forget women's work.
« Daughters » is an exhibition on view in the public space 24/7 until 29 October 2023 at Halles Saint-Géry and Hôtel des Monnaies metro station.
The Art Nouveau Brussels 2023 programme is held jointly by Urban, visit.brussels and their stakeholders.

Art nouveau in La Chaux-de-Fonds
In the effervescence of the late 19th century, Art Nouveau also flourished in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland). Many buildings constructed in the early 20th century incorporated Art Nouveau elements. Curved forms of French or Belgian Art Nouveau meet the more geometric shapes inspired by German or Viennese Jugendstil: this is the Sapin or fir tree style.
Destroyed by fire in 1794, La Chaux-de-Fonds is a town that turned to the watchmaking industry in the 19th century and developed strongly along a checkerboard urban plan. This specificity of its urban ensemble, built by and for the watchmaking industry, has been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 2009.
The production period for the Style Sapin objects and works of art is short. Less than ten years separate the beginnings of the Cours Supérieur d'Art et de Décoration from the outbreak of the First World War. While it's impossible to know precisely the entire artistic output of the period, some objects have been rediscovered. Such is the case of five monumental stained-glass windows created by Jules Courvoisier for the Cernier-Fontainemelon chapel in 1907. Missing when the chapel was remodeled in the 1970s, they were rediscovered in early 2022 and joined the collections of the Musée des beaux-arts. This collection will soon be displayed and installed in a chapel open to the public near the Crematorium.
The Villa Fallet is a manifesto of the Style Sapin, a practical implementation of Charles L'Eplattenier's courses, who wished to integrate this new ornamental vocabulary into domestic architecture, and not just into the decoration of watch cases. The house was designed by a group of students from the Cours supérieur d'art et de décoration. The plans were drawn up by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, the future Le Corbusier, under the direction of architect René Chapallaz. All the ornamentation is based on the fir tree motif, allowing for a wide range of decorative interventions and experiments. Wrought ironwork, woodwork, stonework and sgraffito make the Villa Fallet a total work of art, testifying to the encounter between the Heimatstil and the fir style.

Arabesque, when the contemporary circus interprets Art Nouveau
Puridisciplinary exhibition, a tribute to Art Nouveau and the Brussels Contemporary Circus.
Under the artistic direction of the Brussels acrobatic company Back Pocket, in collaboration with the photographic artist Zenzel, and with the participation of students from ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque de Bruxelles), "ARABESQUE" is a project that proposes a reinterpretation of the Brussels Art Nouveau architecture through circus and acrobatic arts.
This multidisciplinary exhibition, punctuated by photographic works, video and performances, is eminently contemporary and lively. The exhibition is driven by young people and leads the public to take a different look at the Art Nouveau movement.
How do the circus arts and Art Nouveau interact?
How can the contemporary circus highlight Art Nouveau buildings, their curves, their sinuosities, and invite us to rediscover the architectural heritage?
How, conversely, can Art Nouveau highlight the physicality of the circus artist?
ARABESQUE is a project by Back Pocket in collaboration with Zenzel, co-produced by Halles Saint-Géry.
Supported by ESAC, the Brussels-Capital Region, the City of Brussels, the National Lottery and its players, CultureMoves Europe.

Meet the author: Margo Jefferson
What can the black female body be? Pulitzer Prize winner Margo Jefferson asks herself this question in 'Constructing a Nervous System', an intimate and intelligent account that follows up her acclaimed 'Negroland'.
Margo Jefferson, the author of the original and bold 'Negroland', has, in her own words, written a ‘spirited autobiography’. 'Constructing a Nervous System' is neither criticism nor memoir, but a blend of the two. It opens with the account of a bad dream. Jefferson saw herself alone on stage, her arm outstretched, her finger pointing accusingly at her own body. What follows is an inner tempest, an in-depth examination of black female identity, the nervous system of the title referring to the materials that make up her life: ‘chosen, imposed, inherited, made up’.
As the daughter of a paediatrician and a fashionable mother, Margo Jefferson grew up among the highly educated and well-off black elite in Chicago in the 1950s – in what she calls ‘Negroland’. Her life played out against the backdrop of the civil rights movement and the rise of feminism, and was also marked by the contradictions of a black middle class with apparent privilege. In 'Negroland', she asked herself, ‘what has made and maimed me?’ She found her own form for this, zigzagging between perspectives, cheerfully borrowing phrases from song lyrics and from other writers.
The same holds for her new book, in which she explores who the ‘me’ is in that quote. Now Jefferson opens up completely the genre of the memoir. In 'Constructing a Nervous System', she takes herself apart and then rebuilds herself by interweaving criticism with the words of deceased family members and key moments in her life as well as poetry and jazz sounds. There are letters, song lyrics and diary excerpts. Bing Crosby and Ike Turner are two of her alter egos. Thus, she rewrites herself in a new musical form suffused with life.
Great sensitivity is required to make this anatomical dissection, this cutting, into a coherent whole again. Jefferson possesses this sensitivity, this talent, and what’s more, she reveals herself completely. This allows us to come into contact in a delightful way with artists such as Powell, Josephine Baker and Harriet Beecher Stowe, but we also cogitate with her when she writes ‘STOP! Collect yourself, Professor Jefferson’. This is all part of her nervous system, of her intimacy, which thus achieves a prodigious, hypnotic density.
Thus Jefferson explores how her tastes were shaped by artists for who she did not even exist, how she learned to think like artists who were condescending or utterly indifferent to black women like her. Yet self-consciousness in 'Constructing a Nervous System' goes beyond gender, race and class. These are important, but her writing is more personal, more physical. Jefferson fits into the artistic tradition of Emily Dickinson, Frida Kahlo and Ingmar Bergman, who scrutinized themselves mercilessly, free from any political agenda or navel-gazing.

La Décision
Les Enfants du monde à venir
With La Décision, Vincent Hennebicq and Marine Horbaczewski literally give the stage to the future: a dozen children take us on a memorable post-apocalyptic epic.
‘He says that we’re in the year 2081. That migratory movements have led to endless wars. That humans have dried up the planet. That computer servers have run out of memory. That humanity has had to part with the essential works of its history. That it has become sterile. That it is the beginning of the great extinction. That each newborn is greeted as if it were a miracle. That we will have to imagine a new world that we will build on the ashes of the one our parents knew. I don’t know if he’s telling the truth.’

At once impassioned and cheerful, a lyrical and bubbling tragedienne, Hanane Hajj Ali, who has seen her country torn apart, delivers a performance mastered from start to finish in a formidable liberating gesture. An exceptional show.
Did you know that running releases dopamine and adrenaline in your body, hormones that are also neurotransmitters whose role is to pass messages between two cells?
In Jogging, Hanane Hajj Ali, a prominent figure on the Lebanese cultural and artistic scene, runs in order to better convey to us her thoughts, dreams, fears and struggle. Fascinated by the character of Medea, she tells us the story of three women with a tragic destiny: Hanane herself, ‘woman, mother, actress, citizen’, but also two other contemporary Medea figures from the Arab world, far from the stereotypes that are usually heaped on them. On stage, she reveals the ‘hushed’ stories of women citizens who are usually silenced, moving from the sacred to the profane, from the sublime to the banal, breaking taboos with surprising simplicity.
At once impassioned and cheerful, a lyrical and bubbling tragedienne, Hanane Hajj Ali, who has seen her country torn apart by incessant wars and crushed by an unprecedented economic crisis, delivers a performance mastered from start to finish in a formidable liberating gesture. An exceptional show.

De Duivels / Les Diables
At the start of the 17th century, the French provincial town of Loudun is shaken by a wave of hysteria: local nun Jeanne des Anges is accused of demonic possession.
Local authorities fear a demon, with obscene motives, is making the monastery unsafe at night. Soon they catch sight of the progressive and sexually promiscuous priest Urbain Grandier. This accusation marks the start of one of the most infamous witch trials in history. Loudun becomes the scene of a grand political theatre; both the nuns and Grandier become actors in a legal spectacle that addresses brand-new societal issues. Is the nuns’ possession truly a supernatural intervention by evil powers, or is it a collective denunciation of their centuries-long (sexual) oppression? And is Grandier guilty, or is he merely a scapegoat in a fast-evolving world?
Krapp wants to open up this historical case and use it as raw material for a new theatre production. Mats Vandroogenbroeck wrote a new theatre text based on historical materials, from novels and case files to accounts from spectators, exorcists, victims and accused. Nona Demey Gallagher takes on the direction, Timo Sterckx plays Urbain Grandier.
Right at this time of major change – of scientific revolution, emerging enlightened thinking, growing atheism and feminist emancipation – forgotten devils re-emerge, stronger, more powerful and more conservative than ever before.

Notes from the Panorama combines archival images of Black rest and leisure with an accompanying performance score. While the video portion of the project moves through silent footage of playgrounds, picnics, and Black people in repose, the score guides listeners through a series of gestures that deepen your attention to the relationship between self, body, and environment. These haptic modalities emphasise the experience and memory of physical sensation. Notes from the Panorama aims to slow time and support embodied awareness during major transitions in the pandemic, which has only intensified the need for rest in Black and Brown communities, in particular.
