Boulengier

If you want to live like the Belgians, start by going to the bakery. In Brussels we love a good, hearty slice of bread. Weekends are a little more festive. We tend to opt for a nice, crispy roll and a delicious pastry. You'll find these in a great many places throughout the capital. In recent years, several artisan bakeries have opened, often offering products inspired by French, Japanese, Lebanese, Polish or Italian baking traditions. Before you discover the expertise these bakeries have to offer, here's a good tip: go early. You'll have more choice and everything will be fresh out of the oven.

Aube

No, the long queue isn't for a Union Saint-Gilloise football match. The reason for all these crowds near the stadium is a bakery of outstanding quality. At Aube, you'll find an excellent selection of breads and pastries. You can also enjoy a leisurely meal there, either on the terrace or in their converted garage. A little tip: the buckwheat bread is absolutely phenomenal.

Boulengier

Just a stone's throw from the Halle Gate you'll find one of Brussels' most popular bakeries: Boulengier! This establishment was born of a Franco-Belgian collaboration, when two young Brussels entrepreneurs joined forces with an artisan baker from Normandy. The result? Pure expertise! At lunchtime, you can also enjoy a tasty sandwich, filled with only fresh, seasonal produce.

Brood

Stéphanie Browaeys made quite the career change, switching from banking to baking! And we're not complaining! Brood, located in the Brugmann neighbourhood, offers an assortment of sourdough breads and pastries that border on absolute perfection. She regularly uses unexpected ingredients. Our favourite item? Their signature bread! Simply spectacular.

Charli

One of the pioneers of this new generation of bakers is Charli, in Brussels' city centre. Everything you buy at the counter comes from the bakery just behind it. They use only natural ingredients and focuses primarily on traditional French products. But you'll also find typical Belgian pastries and even the classic Zeeuwse bolus.

Goods

You've never tried a kimchi croissant from Goods? You don't know what you're missing! And that goes for their fantastic breads, pastries and cakes too. As the name would suggest, everything is good at Goods. This bakery in the Saint-Boniface neighbourhood is also a breakfast spot, a beer and wine bar, a fermentation workshop, a grocery store and a record shop. Oh, and across the street, they also have Savage, an excellent restaurant that we highly recommend.

Kiekebich

Kiekebich’s story began in an old mill on the outskirts of Brussels. Master miller Tom learned how to bake bread in the most traditional way. After years of perfecting his recipe, he now sells his own bread, which will be sure to give you kiekebich (goose bumps in Brussels dialect). You can order it online and then pick up your order at one of their many collection points in the capital.

La Boule

Do you often find yourself at the station wanting to quickly buy some bread or a pastry? Then pop into La Boule, just a stone's throw from Brussels-South station. This is Vincent's bakery, a Brussels native who loves simplicity. This is reflected both in the decor of his establishment and in the assortment of breads and pastries. Here, everything revolves around the essentials: short supply chains, traditional techniques and pure flavours. Don't miss the incredibly soft Japanese shokupan milk bread.

Pinpin

Finally, the Marolles district has its own delicious artisan bakery. Everything they sell at Pinpin is homemade and handmade. What's more, it's zero waste. As the Belgian saying goes, "Where the brewer goes, the baker doesn't." And yet, here, you get two birds with one stone: the baker also brews beer, cider and other incredibly good fermented drinks, under the brand name Osma.

Renard

Are you looking for an exceptional baker who faithfully upholds Belgian tradition? Then Renard Bakery is the place for you. This success story was the brainchild of a couple with a somewhat ambitious plan: to revive a traditional Belgian bakery. He trained as a baker and she gave the bakery its contemporary look. Today, Renard is a household name in Brussels and beyond.
